The transfer landscape has changed dramatically for Liverpool over the past week or so, with Jürgen Klopp now facing more signings than he perhaps anticipated making.
With Jordan Henderson and Fabinho now on the verge of securing moves to Saudi Arabia (as per Fabrizio Romano), the Reds will be back in the market for new midfielders, having previously looked close to completing their summer business following the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
The experienced duo’s unexpected departure looks to have set Liverpool back somewhat in its rebuild. A new defender looked to have been next on the shopping list before interest from Al-Ettifaq and Al-Ittihad ramped up last week.
Despite Henderson and Fabinho’s impending exits, the Reds are still being linked with another potential departure, with another experienced operator reported to be considering a move.
Meanwhile, despite the need for midfield reinforcements, one forward continues to be linked with a move to Anfield, and it seems he might be keen on the idea of joining Liverpool.
Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.
Thiago Alcântara (Liverpool)
Thiago Alcântara is ‘seriously considering’ leaving Liverpool this summer, according to Sport (via Sport Witness).
The Spanish outlet claims the midfielder finds himself at a crossroads following an injury-hit season. The 32-year-old is currently working on getting back into top shape following hip surgery, but is also said to be considering the idea of ‘reactivating’ his career elsewhere.
Liverpool.com says: Two weeks ago, this might have been an idea that Liverpool could have seriously considered. Now, with Henderson and Fabinho on their way, losing a third experienced midfielder doesn’t look like a good idea.
With just one year remaining on his deal at Anfield, Thiago might have been under consideration as a sellable asset this summer. The cons now perhaps outweigh the pros.
Federico Chiesa (Juventus)
Federico Chiesa is favoring a move to Liverpool over other Premier League clubs, according to Italian journalist Marco Guidi.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from Juventus, with Corriere dello Sport suggesting earlier this week that the Reds are in a $55m (£43m/€50m) race with Manchester United and Newcastle. Guidi now claims Chiesa is ‘more inclined’ to sign for Liverpool or Bayern Munich.
Liverpool.com says: It’s the rumor that just won’t go away. Liverpool has much bigger priorities to focus on at this moment in time, with midfield the obvious area of concern. Chiesa’s signing simply doesn’t make sense, especially given his injury record, and whatever his preference might be, a move to Anfield doesn’t look a likely outcome.
