Liverpool handed transfer delay as timeline for ‘next signing’ set

A number of reported Liverpool transfer targets are currently competing in the Under-21s European Championships

While Liverpool moved quickly to sign Alexis Mac Allister, it remains to be seen who will join the World Cup winner at Anfield as part of a midfield overhaul this summer.

Having controversially not strengthened their engine room last year, the Reds always planned to strengthen their midfield in 2023 with two, if not three, new midfielders expected to be sought. Mac Allister was the first, signed for a fee believed to be in the region of £35m less than two weeks after Liverpool’s 2022/23 season concluded. But while speculation rages on, the Argentine remains the sole arrival over a fortnight later.

That is no reason to panic, of course. From the 20 Premier League clubs, only nine have spent considerable money on new senior signings so far this summer. Even then, three of those clubs have done nothing more than make a previous loan deal permanent.

With the Reds due back at the AXA Training Centre for pre-season training on July 8, their first friendly not scheduled until July 19, and their Premier League opener away at Chelsea on August 13 still seven weeks away, Liverpool still have plenty of time to complete their summer business.

While Jurgen Klopp has previously suggested he would prefer his summer business to be completed before his side reports back for pre-season, it has already been acknowledged that that won’t be possible this summer. While the Reds had all their permanent incoming business completed at this point last year, further patience will be required this summer.

The European Under-21 Championship complicates matters, with a number of Liverpool’s reported targets taking part in the tournament in Romania and Georgia. With the final scheduled for the same date the Reds report back for pre-season training (July 8), it’s clear that, for now, any such business will have to wait.

France pair Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone, the Netherlands’ Ryan Gravenberch, and Spain’s Gabri Veiga are all believed to be on Liverpool’s shortlist of midfield targets. Meanwhile, England’s Levi Colwill has his admirers at Anfield, while the Reds continue to be linked with Dutch centre-back Micky van de Ven.

Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals on Saturday night with one group game left to play while England joined them with a match to spare on Sunday. France, like England, have won their opening two matches, with Kone and Thuram unused substitutes for their 1-0 win over Norway on Sunday. And with the Netherlands also still able to progress themselves, the involvement in the tournament of those six players named above is poised to continue until at least the start of next month.
