BBC pundit in disbelief at what ‘Worst’ Amadou Onana did v Fulham in EFL Cup
Mike Hughes has labelled Amadou Onana’s penalty miss as “the worst penalty ever seen at Goodison Park” as Everton crashed out of the EFL Cup against Fulham.
Bobby Decordova-Reid presented the Toffees with a golden opportunity to progress to the EFL Cup semi-finals but Onana’s stuttered run-up was followed by a dreadful penalty fired straight at Bernd Leno.
Sean Dyche’s men would eventually succumb to the Cottagers as Tosin Adarabioyo fired home the winning penalty but the Belgian midfielder had the chance to end the dreaded penalty shootout much earlier.
“The worst penalty ever seen at Goodison Park by Amadou Onana has been rolled towards Bernd Leno,” the BBC Radio Merseyside commentator said on Tuesday (19 December).
“What are you thinking? Arrogance personified with a little strange run-up. The goalkeeper could have thrown his hat on it. That’s such a missed opportunity – absolutely terrible.”
Ending on a low
Missing a penalty is a feeling that most footballers will have experienced at some point during their careers. Often the blame can be overlooked due to the stress of a penalty shootout situation, but there is no excuse for the manner in which Onana ruined his.
Everton have reached the semi-final of the EFL Cup just twice in the past two decades and missed out on their third due to the 22-year-old’s incredibly poor decision.
The midfielder has quickly become a fan favourite at Goodison Park, especially with his recent performances and goals. However, the penalty miss will come as a setback and a wedge between the player and the Toffees faithful.
That may be furthered by the recent reports of Barcelona’s interest in Onana’s services. It would give the fans a reason to miss the player less if he were to leave the club during the January transfer window, but we all know he is one of the most gifted midfielders Everton have seen for many years.
