After scheduling a medical, Brighton agrees to a club-record deal to bring in a Premier League attacker.

According to reports, Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United have agreed to terms for the signing of 19-year-old attacker Yankuba Minteh. Minteh played for Danish team Odense for 17 appearances, scoring four goals and dishing out six assists before completing a £6.5 million transfer to Newcastle last summer. After joining Feyenoord on loan, Minteh gained valuable first-team experience in a team that finished second in the Eredivisie in 2023–24.

In 37 games for Feyenoord across all competitions, the adaptable attacker—who is primarily a right winger but can also play on the left or as a striker—scored 11 goals and contributed six assists. Several English and foreign clubs are reportedly interested in Minteh due to his performance in the Netherlands. Among them are Liverpool, who are currently led by former Feyenoord manager Arne Slot, Everton, Borussia Dortmund, Lyon, and Marseille. After scheduling a medical, Brighton agrees to a club-record deal to bring in a Premier League attacker.

Minteh will go through a Brighton medical before making a club-record transfer. The Athletic claims that Brighton has agreed to pay roughly £33 million to sign the attacker from Newcastle, suggesting that Brighton has won the race to get him. According to the source, Minteh was granted permission by the Magpies to speak with Brighton about personal terms, and those discussions took place on Saturday night. Minteh reportedly took a plane from his home country of Gambia to the UK, where he is getting ready to go through a medical exam before finalizing his move to the Amex Stadium.

Brighton’s purchase of Minteh will create a new club record, eclipsing the £30m they spent out to recruit forward Joao Pedro from Watford last summer. Minteh is likely to become Brighton’s first signing under new head coach Fabian Hurzeler and the club’s second of the summer transfer window after 19-year-old Ibrahim Osman, whose switch to the Seagulls from Nordsjaelland was completed in February.

Why is Newcastle trying to get rid of Minteh? The idea of Minteh returning to Newcastle and maybe forcing his way into Eddie Howe’s first-team plans after a successful stint at Feyenoord thrilled a lot of Newcastle supporters. Minteh, nevertheless, will not be playing for Newcastle this season since the Magpies are hesitant to trade the young player to avoid breaking the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Newcastle knows that if they don’t make enough sales and balance their book by the June 30 deadline, they could lose points for the following season. Mendeh has stated that he wants to play in the Premier League, and earlier this month, there was talk of him joining Everton, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin possibly going the other way.

Negotiations between the two teams collapsed, though, and Newcastle moved swiftly to agree to sell the attacker to Brighton; the Magpies should benefit more than £25 million from the sale. Elliot Anderson, a 21-year-old midfield player for Nottingham Forest, is supposedly going to be sold by Newcastle to them.
