Hopeful Everton profit and sustainability breach verdict with Premier League announcement imminent – The Esk
The Esk remains confident that Everton haven’t breached profit and sustainability rules for a second time, with an announcement from the Premier League imminent.
The Toffees-focused journalist and blogger shared an update via X on 15 January that word from the league wouldn’t arrive until later in the day, before sharing his verdict that the club should be safe from a second sanction.
David Ornstein reported for The Athletic (14 January) that both Everton and Nottingham Forest were expected to be referred to an independent commission for spending breaches relating to the 2022-23 accounting period.

The Esk wrote: “For those anxiously waiting news from Premier League nothing is expected before mid/late afternoon UK time.”
Asked if he was confident that Everton haven’t breached the rules again he simply replied: “Yes, nothing has changed”.
Relief
If nothing else his verdict will provide some hope for supporters to hold onto if and when the Premier League refers the club to another commission.
It won’t have escaped the notice of anybody with even a passing interest in Everton that they are already operating in the wake of a 10-point deduction imposed for a breach earlier this season, which is under appeal.
The threat of a second hearing going against the Toffees, with the rules now changed to ensure that any outcome of another referral will also be handed down this season, raises the prospect of a ruinous relegation when Sean Dyche had overcome the original penalty with relative ease, until recently at least.
There is clearly going to be some difference of opinion between the club and the league authorities, as there was previously.
And while it ultimately turned out that Everton accepted the Premier League was right based on their reading of the club’s accounts and what costs were to be included, notwithstanding the dispute over the punishment, it would appear there is confidence from at least one source this time around.
It may not prevent the referral itself happening, which would see the worry once again hanging over the club and its fans for months to come, but at least there is hope that it doesn’t mean the writing is already on the wall.
