Pundit left shocked after what £38m Liverpool player did in tonight’s game
Luis Diaz produced a moment of pure quality tonight which stunned the watching commentators.
The Colombian pulled off an audacious back-heeled flick from Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner to put Liverpool 3-1 up against Darmstadt at Deepdale.
It was a delightful piece of skill from the 26-year-old, who registered his third goal of pre-season. And commentating for LFCTV, former Reds player Gary Gillespie summed up just how good it was.
“How he gets that in is beyond me!” raved the Scotsman. “That is fantastic skill. The agility that he shows here.
“The ball has plenty of pace on it but he still has to direct it in the right direction and to do that while running away from the goal, it’s a wonderful, wonderful touch.”
What an exciting footballer we have in Diaz. He may frustrate at times, but the Colombia international is capable of some real magic.
We saw a moment of it earlier in the pre-season where he danced through to score against Greuther Furth. But tonight’s strike was arguably even better.
Starting from near the goal-line, Diaz fights his way through two defenders to latch on to Szoboszlai’s ball in.
Running back towards the penalty spot, the Reds No.7 twists his body to send the ball flying goalward off the back of his heel.
It kissed the bar on its way in, restoring Liverpool’s two goal lead and putting the game beyond the reach of Darmstadt.
As Jurgen Klopp ponders his team selection for Sunday’s Premier League opener, it was great timing from Diaz. The £38m man hasn’t been the most prolific of the Reds forwards in pre-season, but this will have done him the world of good.
Coupled with the rest of his lively display, it should be enough to see him take up his place on the left of the attack at Stamford Bridge. Delightful.
