Eagle-eyed fans spot Al Ettifaq have edited Jordan Henderson’s Liverpool captain armband for transfer unveiling

Al Ettifaq have edited Jordan Henderson’s Liverpool captains armband in their announcement video.

The Liverpool skipper has joined the Suadi Arabian outfit in a deal worth £12million plus add-ons.

Henderson announced he would be leaving the Jurgen Klopp’s side on Wednesday after 12 years during which he captained the club to Premier League and Champions League glory.

Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland for £20million in June 2011 and went on to play 492 times for the Reds, scoring 33 goals and registering 57 assists.

Henderson has left Merseyside, where he won seven major trophies, to link up with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is the manager of Al-Ettifaq.

And Al Ettifaq’s announcement of Henderson has piqued the interest of fans on social media for one specific detail.

In the 46 second video, which gives a whistle-stop tour of Henderson’s career thus far, the club have edited Henderson’s captain’s armband to black and white.

Some eagle-eyed supporter have speculated that this may be an attempt from the club to censor Henderson’s rainbow captain’s armband, which is worn to show support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Henderson’s controversial move
Henderson’s move to Saudi Arabia is controversial given the 33-year-old has been a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community in football.

The midfielder wore rainbow laces during England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, ofter donned a rainbow armband and has repeatedly voiced support for greater inclusivity in the game.

Yet, homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death in Saudi Arabia where he will now play football.

Henderson will reportedly earn £700,000 a week with the Saudi Pro League side, which is around four-times his Liverpool wage.

And last week when news of the move first emerged, 3LionsPride, a fan group for LGBT England supporters, said it was “beyond disappointed”.

The group said in a statement: “Our joy for Mr Henderson when he scored against Ukraine in the Euros (quarter-final) was, in part, due to his kindness and his ‘lucky’ rainbow laces.

“A banner was created to commemorate the low bar he had achieved in being outspoken on our right to support England and show visibility on the pitch.

“If the rumours are true, then that banner will be consigned to the depths of history.”
