This should have been an evening all about the new arrivals Jurgen Klopp hopes can help propel Liverpool back among Europe’s elite.

Instead the spotlight shone brightest on the player for whom the time has seemingly come to walk away from such a challenge.

The absence of Jordan Henderson from Liverpool’s squad for their opening pre-season friendly here in Karlsruhe wasn’t entirely unexpected, given his ongoing flirtation behind the scenes with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.
