Liverpool and Newcastle United look set to battle it out for the capture of a top Bundesliga player after trusted journalist David Ornstein revealed Jurgen Klopp’s side have just joined the hunt.
Liverpool are desperate to improve their midfield this summer as Klopp has had to deal with problems in the position for far too long. The Reds have allowed James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave Anfield on free transfers, while Argentina star Alexis Mac Allister has joined the club from Brighton.
Brighton were hoping to receive between £60-70million for Mac Allister, but Liverpool only paid an initial £35m for him. Although, Sky Sports claim the deal could rise to £55m depending on bonus clauses.
Liverpool have since turned their attention to a second midfield capture, with Nice’s Khephren Thuram emerging as a key target. However, Liverpool are facing a problem on that front as Nice want to keep him for an extra year.
As Liverpool’s midfield options will not be strong enough if they just bring in Mac Allister, club chiefs have quickly got to work on finding alternative signings.
And it seems they have gone from France to Germany in their search. As per The Athletic’s senior transfer reporter Ornstein, Liverpool are ‘exploring’ a move for RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai.
Liverpool officials met with the 22-year-old’s entourage last week to try and find out whether he would be open to joining them. Szoboszlai appears settled at Leipzig but may be up for joining Liverpool in what would be a big next step in his career.
Ornstein adds that the deal is complicated for a couple of reasons. First of all, Szoboszlai will not come cheap as Leipzig want to receive his €70m (£60.4m) release clause in full before sanctioning an exit. Plus, the release clause has an expiry date.

Fellow journalist Fabrizio Romano claims it is only valid until June 30, shutting down claims that it will run until July 15.
Not only will Liverpool have to put up a significant amount of money for Szoboszlai, but they will also have to fend off Newcastle.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with the Hungarian in recent weeks. Indeed, on June 9 French outlet L’Equipe predicted Newcastle to ‘make a staggering offer’ for him.
That bid has yet to arrive, though Liverpool will be wary about Newcastle’s huge spending power and the fact their move could be blown out of the water at any moment.
Leipzig will be frustrated if Szoboszlai leaves them for one of his two Premier League suitors this summer.
He had a big impact for them last term, registering 10 goals and 13 assists in 46 games. Those goal contributions helped Leipzig win a second consecutive DFB-Pokal, as well as finish third in the Bundesliga and reach the Champions League round of 16.
