Klopp gets his way as Liverpool strike ‘total agreement’ on Bundesliga transfer with perfect terms
Liverpool have a “total agreement” on a deal with RB Leipzig that will see Jurgen Klopp secure the exact terms he hoped for, per a report.
The Reds sanctioned four arrivals during the 2022/23 campaign, with Cody Gakpo’s January arrival following deals for Calvin Ramsay, Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez last summer.
Ramsay endured an injury-ravaged first campaign on Merseyside, while we’re still yet to see the best of Darwin Nunez. Gakpo wasted no time fitting into Klopp’s frontline, but it was an altogether frustrating season for Carvalho.
Indeed, the 20-year-old – who set Liverpool back around £7.7m to sign – racked up just 640 minutes of action across all competitions.
Carvalho operated primarily as a No 10 at former club Fulham. However, Klopp does not operate with a conventional No 10, instead preferring his tried and tested 4-3-3 formation.
Carvalho doesn’t appear to have a natural place in Liverpool’s squad. Combined with his lack of action, Klopp publicly suggested Carvalho could leave Liverpool on loan this summer.
German side RB Leipzig quickly emerged as a credible contender to sign Carvalho. However, Leipzig favoured a permanent switch and duly lodged a £10m bid.
The offer was rejected by Liverpool who had no intention of giving up on Carvalho just yet. As such, a loan that included an option or obligation to buy was also not to Liverpool’s liking.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool’s patience has been rewarded.
Carvalho to Leipzig agreed; straight loan looming
Indeed, the transfer guru tweeted Carvalho to Leipzig is now advancing, though the deal will comprise a straight loan and not include an option or obligation to buy
Romano stated Leipzig and Liverpool have struck a “total agreement” that will see Carvalho spend the 2023/24 campaign in Germany.
The final details are currently being thrashed out and the expectation is a deal will cross the line next week. Romano stressed an option or obligation to buy will NOT be included in the loan terms.
The move is thus perfect for Liverpool who can kick having to make a concrete decision on Carvalho down the road.
What’s more, Carvalho is a lock to play more frequently at Leipzig than he otherwise would at Anfield next season.
In the event he develops and Liverpool do decide to cash in next summer, Carvalho’s value will have increased by way of impressing at a Champions League side.
