Liverpool would prefer to sign ‘phenomenal’ £26m player instead of Ryan Gravenberch – Roman

Liverpool are fans of Ryan Gravenberch but are still set to prioritise a deal for Manu Kone.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Writing in his latest column for CaughtOffside this morning, Romano claimed that although Liverpool ‘appreciate’ Gravenberch, he isn’t currently top of their list.

It remains to be seen whether Bayern Munich will let-up on their stance not to sell the 21-year-old. According to Romano, talks are set to take place between player, club and manager ‘soon.’

But in the meantime, it looks like Liverpool will focus their efforts on bringing in Kone, as well as France U21 teammate Khephren Thuram.

“Liverpool appreciate Gravenberch, for sure. But for now their focus remains on Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone,” Romano reports. “For Gravenberch, Bayern’s position is crucial as they don’t want to sell him, but conversations between the player, club and manager Thomas Tuchel will take place soon to clarify the situation.”

Liverpool still waiting for next move

Liverpool’s position on these three players really is a bit of a head-scratcher. There has been virtually no movement since Alexis Mac Allister was signed two weeks ago today.

The case of Kone in particular is the most bemusing of all. With Borussia Monchengladbach seemingly open to selling for potentially as little as £26m, it doesn’t seem like a difficult deal to do. For a player labelled as ‘phenomenal’ in his ability, that looks like the kind of bargain the Reds are looking for.

Talks have also reportedly been ongoing with Kone’s agents for the past couple of weeks. You wouldn’t have thought Liverpool would be a hard sell for him.

And yet, nothing has moved forward.

The same is also true of Thuram and Gravenberch, who’s representatives have been sounded out, too. Both players are said to be keen on joining Liverpool, and still no truly positive updates are forthcoming. You’d have thought the Reds would have their ducks in a row by now.

Instead, it seems that they’re waiting for a different opportunity. Thuram may well be a priority, but we get the impression that the other two are alternatives. Maybe the player they really want hasn’t yet been revealed. As they do a deal behind closed doors, they have Kone and then Gravenberch in case things go south.

This is all purely speculation, of course, but until we get something more concrete to go on, that’s all any of us can do! Let’s move this party along, Reds.
