Tottenham man confirms he is leaving the club in search for a new challenge

Tottenham Hotspur’s U16s coach Yaya Toure has taken to Twitter to announce his departure from the club as he prepares to join Standard Liege as their assistant manager.

The former Manchester City midfielder, who transitioned into coaching after an impressive playing career, joined Tottenham last season while working on his coaching badges and was eventually named their academy coach.

He tweeted:

“I am delighted to share that I will be taking on the role of assistant coach at Standard de Liege. It’s an honour to join the club and I am looking forward to working with head coach Carl Hoefkens.

“I would like to thank everyone at the Tottenham Hotspur Academy for their support in the 18 months I spent with the club. A special mention to Dean Rastrick, Chris Powell and all the young players. Thank you.”

Prior to joining Tottenham, Toure had coaching experience at Ukrainian side Olimpik Donetsk and Russian team Akhmat Grozny.

While Toure’s departure may not come as a surprise, as his position at Spurs was always meant to be a stepping stone towards advancing his managerial career.

Joining Manchester City from Barcelona in 2010, he went on to make over 300 appearances, scoring 79 goals and 49 assists.

Toure played a key role in City’s success, winning three Premier League titles, two League Cups, the FA Cup, and the Community Shield.

He is regarded as one of the best midfielders the league has seen and has etched himself into the Premier League all time greats.

With his illustrious playing career behind him, Toure is now embarking on a managerial journey, aiming to replicate his success as a coach.

His move to Standard Liege marks another step forward as he strives to establish himself as one of the top manager in football.
