The Reds previously turned to Charlton Athletic when acquiring the services of Joe Gomez in 2015, to Hull City for Andy Robertson in 2017 and may be wise to follow this path on a more regular basis. Alex Scott – Bristol City

Gustavo Hamer – Coventry City

A driving force behind Coventry’s promotion push, the tough-tackling midfielder has settled into the second tier in impressive fashion since joining the Sky Blues from Dutch club PEC Zwolle in 2020.

Able to chip with both goals and assists, the 25-year-old scored nine times as well as hitting double figures for assists last campaign to help Mark Robins’ men on their way to the Championship play-off final.

Hamer averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game in 2022/23 and possesses the grit required to cope with the physicality of the Premier League.

Most suited to fill the role of Fabinho, the Reds could soon be in need of a player to fill this role and would be making a smart investment in the form of the Brazilian-born star.

Ismaila Sarr – Watford

Previously on Liverpool’s three-man attacking shortlist during the summer of 2020, the Reds instead pursued a deal to sign Diogo Jota from Wolves and the rest is history.

Sarr has largely impressed whenever featuring at the top level, scoring five goals and providing six assists during his first campaign in the English top flight. His standout display in 2019/20, ironically, arrived against Liverpool after scoring twice before setting up a Troy Deeney goal as the Reds’ unbeaten 27-game Premier League run was ended.

The Senegalese international has come close to leaving Vicarage Road on multiple occasions, though it won’t be long before he heads for the exit door. Out of contract next summer, Liverpool could snap up the forward at a discounted rate or wait until next summer for what would be the ultimate free signing. Still only 25 years of age, Sarr would be a strong option to add to Klopp’s attacking armoury.

Gabriel Sara – Norwich City

Plucked from Sao Paulo for a £6million fee last summer, the Brazilian midfielder certainly made his presence felt during his first year in English football. Despite Norwich falling short of expectations, Sara lived up to the hype in the second tier and has been subsequently linked with a range of other clubs.

Capable of playing off the striker, Sara also serves as a commanding figure in the centre of the pitch. Goals from midfield have been acted as a key strength of the Canaries’ recruit, who was responsible for a sensational goal versus Millwall during the latter stages of the 2022/23 season.

Asked to clarify his future back in March, the 23-year-old said: “I want to live in the present. I don’t know anything about these reports, actually. I am feeling so confident and like I’m adapting to this league. Every game I am feeling better. I’m learning to fight to the ball, how to deal with the press and tactically. The quality on the pitch is making me better and my team are making me a better player.”
