44-year-old could land first job since Leeds exit after Aston Villa announcement – opinion

Astn Villa confirmed the appointment of Sevilla’s Monchi as president of football operations on Friday which could open the door for Victor Orta to return to football after his Leeds United exit.

Monchi’s arrival at Villa is seen as a significant coup following the vast amount of success he enjoyed at Sevilla, with the Europa League champions now in the market for a replacement.

Orta is reportedly the favourite to take the role with the 44-year-old already having been assessing Sevilla’s squad to see where they will need to strengthen this summer.

He spent seven years at the Spanish side as technical director earlier in his career, winning four major honours between the years of 2006 and 2013, including two Copa del Reys.

After a very difficult final couple of years at Leeds, Orta will be desperate to rebuild his reputation in football and Sevilla could provide him with the platform to do so.

According to reports from AS earlier this month, Orta is very much the leading candidate for the role, though could face competition from Braulio Vazquez, who has done an excellent job at Osasuna.

Orta is said to possess a very good relationship with the outgoing Monchi having spent many years as his right-hand man, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he is a personal recommendation.

Sevilla will be seen as a good opportunity for Orta after his sacking at Leeds, which was done after a series of poor decisions in the final 18 months of his time at Elland Road.

Orta was responsible for a number of poor signings and managerial appointments, with the Spaniard also at fault for keeping Jesse Marsch for so long.

San Francisco 49ers Enterprises and Angus Kinnear are actually conducting a full review of Leeds’ recent failings, as they look to take their time in finding Orta’s successor.
