The Hawks are getting ready for the most significant offseason in the team’s history—and no, I don’t believe it to be absurd. The team will have to make tough choices regarding a number of players in the struggle with the salary cap, such as Clint Capela, De’Andre Hunter, Trae Young, and Dejounte Murray, one of whom will undoubtedly be dealt this summer. In addition, Jalen Johnson is eligible for an extension, while Saddiq Bey will require a new deal in order to remain in Atlanta.

All of that, though, won’t happen before Wednesday night’s NBA Draft, in which the Hawks will select first overall. Currently, all pundits are hurling rumors at each other to see what sticks, but Alex Sarr is taking center stage.

As soon as the Hawks couldn’t get Sarr inside the facility for a workout, there were reports going around that his camp didn’t want him in Atlanta. Subsequently, according to Jonathan Givony, the Hawks are down to just two prospects: Donovan Clingan and Zaccharie Risacher. Sarr is expected to go No. 2 to the Wizards. Then the story took on a fresh twist. According to NBA clubs, the Hawks are hinting that they might select Alex Sarr first overall, which some believe is more of an effort to pressure the Washington Wizards into trading up, according to Givony.

However, why? Why wouldn’t Alex Sarr want to join the Hawks and play alongside Trae Young? They are far more competitive than the Wizards, and Quin Snyder is a tried-and-true player. Givony went into more detail about his possible reasons for not attending the Hawks.

“I understand their point of view where they’re looking at the Wizards and they’re saying, Marvin Bagley, Richaun Holmes, Kyle Kuzma at the 4, who probably views himself more as a 3,” Givony said on The Hoop Collective podcast. “When you look at the Washington Wizards depth chart and you compare it to the Atlanta Hawks depth chart, with Jalen Johnson at the 4, Onyeka Okongwu, Clint Capela, and De’Andre Hunter sliding to the 4,” Givony said. “Alex Sarr probably looks at that and thinks it’s a really attractive opportunity to play a really featured role and be there for minutes.”

That Alex Sarr won’t play a big part in Atlanta is a concept that I don’t fully get. Because Jalen Johnson can play several roles and the Hawks are anticipated to move Clint Capela and possibly De’Andre Hunter as well, Sarr will be featured if he proves to be good enough. If Hunter is preserved, even then, he is a more natural 3.

If Alex Sarr is worthy, a starting lineup that includes Trae Young, Jalen Johnson, De’Andre Hunter, Onyeka Okgonwu, and Sarr would provide him plenty of touches. Apart from their lack of talent, I’m not sure what the Wizards have to offer in comparison.

We can discuss the entire scenario involving Trae Young and Dejounte Murray in Atlanta, as well as the surrounding intrigue, but perhaps a young player wouldn’t find that appealing. Another possible explanation for Sarr’s desire for Washington could be that several players attempted to avoid the Hawks the previous season, according to Givony.

Now, I could buy into this sentiment. It’s not that Dejounte Murray and Trae Young are the problems; rather, it’s that the Atlanta Hawks franchise has been disorganized lately. To be sure, the Wizards are also hardly a well-oiled machine. Alex Sarr is the greatest talent on my board, thus if I were Landry Fields and the Hawks, I would take him as the first overall choice.
