CONFIRMED: David Marshall Joins Hibernian Staff After Retirement, Taking on Key Technical Performance Role.
David Marshall will join the Hibernian team subsequent to his retirement announcement.
After declaring his retirement, former Scotland goalie David Marshall will become a member of the Hibernian football staff. The 39-year-old has ended his playing career, having earned 47 caps for his country and 670 first-team appearances.
Marshall gained notoriety in 2004 when, after replacing the fired Rab Douglas at halftime in the first leg, he kept out Barcelona over the course of two legs to help Celtic win the UEFA Cup. The 19-year-old had not yet made his league debut at that point. The goalie, who was born in Glasgow, played for Norwich, Cardiff, Hull, Wigan, Derby, and QPR before going on to become a national hero for saving Scotland in a shootout against Serbia to send them to the Euro 2020 finals and break their 23-year wait to play in a major tournament.
Before joining Hibs in 2022, Marshall started all three of the team’s games during the European Championship finals. He played 86 times for the club and captained it for one season. Under sporting director Malky Mackay, Marshall will take on the role of technical performance manager at Hibernian. He was a member of the Hibernian Community Foundation board of directors before obtaining a master’s degree in sports directorship.
