‘Disgrace’ – Tony Bellew explodes at Premier League live on talkSPORT in Everton appeal verdict
Tony Bellew has exploded in a rant live on talkSPORT in which he labelled the Premier League an “absolute disgrace” in a brand new verdict on the Everton Profit and Sustainability Rules appeal.
The former world-champion boxer, and massive Everton fan, questioned how the club could have been deducted more points for one breach of the rules than other clubs are for going into administration.
He also suggested that the Premier League are entirely focused on the big six clubs, and as Everton don’t rank among those, they don’t get treated quite as well as Manchester City and Chelsea do.
“Can I just get this off my chest,” started Bellew live on talkSPORT [7 February, 09:41] “How can you get nine points deducted when you go into administration, but ten points for the charge? It just doesn’t make sense.
“Your club has completely failed in every aspect when you go into administration, you get nine points, we’ve overspent by a couple of quid and we’ve got ten points.
“City have spent about six billion quid along with Chelsea and these fellas are laughing all the way to the bank. Once again, the establishment only tries to punish scousers, it’s an absolute disgrace. The Premier League needs investigating.
“They’re keeping the rich rich and the poor poor, the Premier League is built for six clubs, we’re becoming more and more aware, and Everton aren’t one of those six clubs any more. It’s an absolute disgrace.”
Bellew is right about Everton – to an extent
Bellew is right in that it seems ridiculous to punish the club more for one breach of the rules than any club that goes into administration as a result of complete mismanagement and failure to keep the club going.
Everton await the outcome of their appeal
He must be aware, however, that there is a difference between the ongoing cases. Chelsea and Man City are both currently being investigated, and due to their cases being more complex than Everton’s, of course, it will take longer to deliver their punishments than it did in their case.
An update on the appeal process is set to be heard in the middle of February, with the hearing having already taken place, and the hope is that the punishment will be reduced as it was over the top, to begin with.
When City and Chelsea, as well as Nottingham Forest, are eventually punished, should they be found guilty of their breaches, those punishments will have to be in line with the one given to Everton. If that is not the case – then would be the time to make this argument.
