Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has given his reaction on Sky Sports News to the VAR controversy in the Premier League match between Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the weekend.
Dermot Gallagher is seemingly confused by Liverpool’s statement on the VAR decision that went against them in the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur in regard to the goal from Luis Diaz.
The former Premier League referee has said on Sky Sports News (11:33am, October 2, 2023) that he does not understand why Liverpool have put out such a strong statement about the VAR controversy.

Gallagher has noted that all referees make mistakes.
The former Premier League referee said when asked about Liverpool’s statement: “I don’t understand what it means, to be honest, sorry.
“I seriously don’t.

“It was a mistake. Referees make mistakes all the time.
“It was a mistake.
“It’s a very, very bad mistake, no doubt about that, but it’s a mistake.
“It was not done deliberate.”
Liverpool statement on VAR controversy against Tottenham Hotspur
As we all know by now, the goal that Luis Diaz scored for Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur was incorrectly ruled out.
Diaz was deemed offside by on-pitch officials, but the Colombia international winger was not.
As reported by ESPN, VAR knew that it was not offside, but what he failed to note was that the on-pitch referee thought that it was.
VAR Darren England thought that he was checking a goal rather than a disallowed goal.
England thought that the on-pitch referee had given a goal.
He was obviously wrong.
In a lengthy statement on their official website, Liverpool have expressed his disappointment at the decision.
The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners are simply not happy at just an apology, suggesting that they could take further actions.
The statement added: “That such failings have already been categorised as ‘significant human error’ is also unacceptable.
“Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.
“This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.
“In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”
