Tottenham Hotspur have been fairly quiet in the summer transfer window thus far, though they have managed to get one signing over the line.
Spurs have signed one of England’s most exciting young players this summer, landing Archie Gray from Leeds United.
As for outgoings, Tottenham have allowed Joe Rodon to go the other way, while four others players have left Spurs after their contracts expired.
Tottenham have been linked with a number of attacking players in recent months, including one of the Premier League’s most exciting forwards.
Now, Spurs have been told by Darragh MacAnthony that the £50million-rated player would “finally” turn them into a “top-three team” in Ange Postecoglou’s style.
Tottenham told to sign Ivan Toney and sell Richarlison
The player in question is Brentford’s Ivan Toney, a player who has been heavily linked with a move to one of several Premier League clubs.
However, according to The Sun, there hasn’t actually been much interest in the 28-year-old this summer, which has led the Bees to rethink their player’s valuation.
The report claims that Brentford are thinking of slashing Toney’s price tag to £50million, with Tottenham and West Ham now “his most likely suitors”.
MacAnthony is the chairman of Peterborough United, where Toney got his big break after being sold for less than £1million by Newcastle United in 2018.
The striker has since gone on to reach the upper levels of the English top flight and scored in England’s penalty shootout win over Switzerland at Euro 2024.
MacAnthony, speaking on talkSPORT (19/7/24, 12:26pm), sung Toney’s praises and deemed him a perfect fit for Angeball at Tottenham.
“I think if they got Richarlison gone and got him (Toney) in, Ange would finally have a top-three team to mirror his style and what he wants to do,” said the 48-year-old.
Toney would be a solid signing for Tottenham
Toney has proven himself in both the Premier League and at international level, showing how world-class he is, and there’s no doubt a big career move now beckons for him.
Last year, Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports that Toney is “one of the best attacking players in the league”, while Thomas Frank deemed him “the best penalty taker in the world”.
For less than £50million, Toney would be a worthy signing who could certainly help Tottenham go up a level and potentially break into the top four.
Tottenham’s pre-season has got off to a bright start.
Spurs beat Hearts comfortably this week to get the ball rolling for the 2024/.25 season, and there were plenty of stories to come out of that game.
Archie Gray was lauded for his strong performance at centre-back, while Mikey Moore also earned plaudits.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has been discussing this game, and he says that James Maddison looked very sharp on his first outing of the season.
However, according to Gold, there was a worrying moment when Maddison stayed down with an injury as the journalist noted that the midfielder kept getting kicked during the game.

Gold shared what he noticed about Maddison during the game.
“Maddison, he looked sharp, he was good. He was getting lumps kicked out of him as he always does, and one was a little bit worrying as he was down for a couple of minutes, but everything seemed to be fine, at least Ange indicated after the game that everyone was fine,” Gold said.
Maddison injuries are a problem
James Maddison is a fantastic player, but he may have another frustrating season if he keeps getting targeted in this way.
Maddison has been prone to injury over the past few years, with numerous ankle problems plaguing the midfielder, and, by the sounds of it, those issues haven’t fully subsided.
As Gold says, there is no major issue with Maddison right now, but the fact that he’s getting knocks in the first game of pre-season isn’t ideal.
Fingers crossed Maddison can stay injury free this season.
