Peter Schmeichel says Liverpool will fail to do one thing this season

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Liverpool simply not be able to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, the former Danish goalkeeper stated that the Reds don’t have enough defensive quality to challenge Pep Guardiola’s side for the title.

Liverpool have remained unbeaten in their opening five Premier League matches having claimed a late 3-1 win against Wolves this weekend, though City have won all five of their games.

Yet Schmeichel thinks the Reds can’t match City, with the pundit saying: “I don’t think Liverpool can keep up with City. I don’t think they can. If there is a team, it might be Arsenal, but that is a big ‘might’.

“I don’t think anyone can stay with Man City, we were just looking at that line-up today and you look at their back four, how are you gonna compete with that?

Liverpool have started the new season off to a flyer, yet if the Reds are to challenge for the Premier League, they will need to add to their defence in the January window.

We have already seen this season the limitations of Jurgen Klopp’s options, and with the UEFA Europa League kicking off this week, the defence will be stretched even more.

And injuries begin to pile up, Liverpool will have to delve into the market, something the Anfield side should have done this summer to begin with.
