Liverpool now in advanced talks to extend ‘insane’ player’s contract

Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas looks set to be rewarded with a new contract at Liverpool over the international break.
The 27-year-old has featured for just four minutes this season, though remains a highly rated figure in the dressing room at Anfield and will now extend his stay with the Reds for another two years according to Fabrizio Romano.
Tsimikas is currently on duty for his national team, but he may return as soon as tomorrow with Greece’s Euro 2024 Qualifier against Gibraltar tonight capping off this round of international fixtures for Gus Poyet’s side.
Prior to the Gibraltar clash, Tsimikas’ Greece faced a Netherlands side featuring Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk, they lost 3-0 with the former getting on the scoresheet against his Reds teammate.
The defender has been in every matchday squad for Jurgen Klopp’s men so far this season, though he has only featured for four minutes in a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Since signing for Liverpool from Olympiacos in 2020, Tsimikas has featured 62 times for the club and proven himself to be a more than reliable deputy for Andy Robertson – not just reliable, but a bargain too at just £11.75million.
Dubbed the ‘Greek Scouser’, he has been a hit with supporters since his arrival for both his performances on the pitch and his character off it.
Although the left-back is yet to score for the club, he has registered 12 assists. Six came last season, the other six came during the previous campaign.
One assist in particular earned praise from Klopp who labelled the move ‘insane’.
Tsimikas extension a boost
During a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers towards the end of last season, the Greece international set up Mohamed Salah to seal victory on home soil.
“The second goal was insane,” said Klopp.
“Super counter-attack, top passes, the patience of Kostas is super – waiting until Mo is finally in the right place, then he just brings it over the line. Then controlling it [the game] again and it made it a great night.”
He might not have featured regularly so far this season, but Tsimikas is no doubt a dependable member of the squad and securing his services for at least another few seasons will certainly be a benefit.
