Jack Grealish mistake made as David Moyes blamed for Everton loss vs Liverpool

Everton were unable to produce a comeback in the Merseyside derby on Saturday as Liverpool held on to a 2-1 win.
David Moyes’ terrible record at Anfield continued as Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike’s goals proved to be the difference in the derby.
While Idrissa Gueye did pull one back, the Toffees were unable to net a second.
Darren England’s refereeing was brought into question throughout the Merseyside derby. However, Moyes may have been at fault for the overall result at Anfield.

Going into the match, Everton were on fine form in the Premier League and sat sixth in the table.

While the second half performance against Liverpool showed signs of this, the first was woeful from the visitors, and ultimately cost them the result.

Gueye netted in the second half, but it proved to be too little too late
However, talking to beIN SPORTS on 20 September, Jason McAteer actually believes that Moyes’ decision to play both Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was a tactical mistake which cost the visitors the match.
He said: “I don’t want to be critical of David Moyes, but I think tactically he got it wrong today.
“If you’re going to play like he set out to do, which is sit deep and play on the break, I don’t see the point in having Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall in the team.”
David Moyes needs to improve in big matches for Everton
While there are few criticisms that can be attributed to Moyes since his return to Everton, the Toffees’ results in big matches have left much to be desired.
Against the ‘big six’, Everton have only beaten Tottenham since his return to the Merseyside club, who had an awful 2024/25 campaign.
If the Toffees want to return to the top, then they must start picking up wins against these sides, even though they may not be the favourites.
The point lost against Liverpool could prove to be costly at the end of the season, and while Moyes isn’t entirely at fault for the defeat, it could have been prevented.
