What the Everton players were saying about Merlin Rohl after his first training session

Everton ended the summer transfer window in style with the signing of midfielder Merlin Rohl.

David Moyes was pushing Everton to add another midfielder before the deadline on Monday evening, and they did exactly that.

It was a busy window for Everton, who saw major player turnover following a number of free agent departures in June.

At the end of the window, Moyes was delighted with Everton’s transfer business, having seen some real quality added to his squad.

Everton wanted two defenders signed on deadline day, but the Toffees were forced to settle with landing Rohl from Freiburg.

The young midfielder has now had an opportunity to train with Everton at Finch Farm, and Moyes has already formed a strong opinion.

After hours of waiting, Rohl’s signing on Merseyside was finally announced on Monday evening.

Everton have landed Rohl on an initial loan, which they hold the obligation to purchase at the end of the campaign.

MORE EVERTON STORIES
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Scott Minto shared what Moyes has told him personally about Rohl’s early training sessions at Everton.

“I actually saw David Moyes yesterday [Wednesday] at a charity event and did a Q&A with him. All the Everton fans were just all over Jack Grealish and the [impression] he’s made,” said Minto.

“I talked about him [Rohl] as well, and he said [Moyes] he had his first training session on Tuesday and he couldn’t have been more impressed.

“He also said, you know when someone comes in and can make an immediate impact for the club, is when the rest of the lads come off the training pitch and say: ‘he’s decent’. So, he’s already made that first impression.”

Liverpool had previously scouted Rohl, which will also give Everton bragging rights over their rivals ahead of this month’s Merseyside Derby.

There will be a hope that Rohl could provide an immediate impact, but at the very least, he strengthens Moyes’ growing list of quality option in midfield.

Rohl excited to play in front of Everton fans
Everton fans have been impressed with Rohl and the first interview he gave to the club’s social media channels.

The midfielder was not called up to the Germany U21 squad for the latest international break, which will work to his favour at Everton.

With an opportunity to settle in on Merseyside, Rohl appears to already be setting a positive impression after showcasing his talents in front of Moyes.

Speaking to the club’s media, Rohl has shared exactly why he wanted to make the move to Everton.

“I’m really excited and full of joy to sign for Everton. It’s a big club, with great history and great fans,” he said.

“It’s the right time for me to join Everton. It feels like a shifting point for the Club. The future looks really good and I’m excited to be part of it.

“I’ve watched the evolution of the Club closely. With the manager and stadium, there are a lot of positives.

“I just love to play football and can’t wait to play in front of such passionate fans in such a great stadium.”
