Everton are ‘serious’ in negotiating terms to sign £7m player, they’ve already bid once

Everton’s summer of spending is due to continue despite PSR remaining a threat, with one expected departure set to fund the bulk of their activity in one fell swoop.

After all, minor sales of Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey just kept the profits ticking over, but it always felt like more would be needed.

That has now come in the form of their 6 foot 4 Belgian, with Amadou Onana set to join Aston Villa after a fee was agreed.

A necessary evil, and quite comfortably the most manageable sale of those that are being touted, they could potentially be set to instantly reinvest a chunk of those funds into a defender, as their pursuit of a Serie A star continues.

The latest on these efforts to bring Jackson Tchatchoua from Italy to England come courtesy of Italian outlet L’Arena, who now claim that the Toffees ‘seem to be serious’ in their efforts to negotiate a deal with Hellas Verona.

Having only joined his current club this very summer, as they turned his loan deal from Charleroi permanent, they stand to make a great profit from his quick-fire sale.

And, given Everton have already bid £7m for Tchatchoua, their interest is affirmed.

But it is this latest report that suggests that despite there being plenty of interest, ‘there is always Everton’ waiting in the wings.

That continued effort to bring him to Goodison Park should bode well in convincing the player of their desperation, and devotion, to securing his services.

Do Everton need more defenders?
Unless Tchatchoua is a highly versatile player capable of playing all across the backline, then there really is little need for this acquisition really.

After all, of all the positions that need added depth, right-back is surely low on that list.

He will face competition from club captain Seamus Coleman, Ashley Young and Nathan Patterson, and having also enjoyed a stint at right winger, will likely not surpass Dwight McNeil on that flank either.

So, if he was to assume the Godfrey role, happy to sit in the wings and plug gaps when necessary, then why not take a chance?

But given his ties to the right flank, and solely the right flank, then questions must arise.

Everton may be in a stronger financial position, but they are not quite sturdy enough to start taking risks. Kevin Thelwell should know better than to desperately chase after someone who doesn’t really seem to fit into Sean Dyche’s squad.
