“Southampton Aiming to Deepen Leeds United’s Playoff Woes with Bid for Fan Favorite”
Leeds United’s hopes of securing Joe Rodon for another transfer this summer have suffered another setback, with Southampton now competing alongside Ipswich Town for his signature.
As the transfer window opens, much of the discussion for Leeds and manager Daniel Farke has centered on the conclusion of several loan deals. Utilizing the loan market to enhance the squad is crucial for escaping the Championship, as evidenced by Joe Rodon’s previous arrival. However, the club now faces challenges in retaining him at Elland Road on a long-term basis.
Southampton join race to sign Leeds United favourite Joe Rodon
TEAMtalk reports this week that Leeds’ chances of re-signing Joe Rodon, either permanently or on loan, have taken a significant hit due to emerging interest from Premier League clubs.
Southampton has recently shown interest in the Welsh international, after defeating Leeds in the Championship playoff final in late May.
The Saints have already finalized a major defensive transfer by activating an automatic buy clause for Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Manchester City for £20 million.
“Ipswich Town Also Competing for Rodon”
Rodon is reportedly valued at £12-15 million, allowing Tottenham to potentially recoup a significant portion of the £15 million they spent on him in 2020.
In addition to Southampton, newly promoted Ipswich Town also admires Rodon, following his impressive loan spell at Elland Road. Tottenham-based journalist Alasdair Gold reveals that Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is a strong admirer of Rodon.
Ipswich is named as a potential suitor for Rodon, who is almost certain to leave Spurs in some capacity as he enters the final year of his contract.
While it would be nice to think Rodon might reject other offers to stay at Elland Road, the likelihood of Premier League football makes that improbable.
Rodon deserves the chance to play in the Premier League, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Ipswich pursued him, as he fits McKenna’s style more than Russell Martin’s.
Considering Southampton already has Harwood-Bellis, who is both younger and a better player than Rodon, there’s no clear reason for them to pursue him.
