John Bennett has told Philippe Clement that there is money to spend at Rangers this summer, according to the Daily Record. On June 14, Andrew Newport of the paper’s website stated that as the manager and his head of recruitment, Nils Koppen, attempt to restructure the Light Blues squad, the executive chairman has made it clear that the board is prepared to “dig deep if required.”
Koppen reportedly spent months before to the transfer window “assessing numbers and speaking with agents.” Additionally, Bennett—whose position was renamed after CEO James Bisgrove’s abrupt departure to Saudi Arabia—has informed Clement that the funds will be provided so he can pursue his goals. For months, Nils Koppen has been preparing the ground for potential Rangers transfers.
Early in the summer, Clement and Koppen made a move to bring in January left-back target Jefte. They then swiftly completed a loan-to-buy agreement for Oscar Cortes, who had been on loan.
While many first-team players were free to go when their contracts expired, Leon Balogun’s was extended, while teenager Clinton Nsiala was signed by AC Milan. However, it appears that a lot more work will be needed if Rangers are to emerge from the summer equipped to unseat Celtic, having missed the opportunity to do so the previous campaign.
There would naturally be concerns that there wouldn’t be enough money to turn the Gers around a year after Michael Beale was given the similar task and failed to do it.
Bennett’s willingness to allow another manager to start making large purchases right away is a good indicator. However, should Rangers continue to lag behind their Old Firm rivals, especially if they have to replace their manager each season, then the pressure will be on to do things well this time around. Therefore, significant sales will inevitably be made to help pay for the remaining recruits, and by the time the next season begins, the team may look considerably different.
