“Newcastle United Targets Geertruida: Feyenoord Captain Draws Magpies’ Eye, with Versatile Defender”.
Yankuba Minteh is set to join Newcastle Unite this summer, potentially alongside a teammate from Feyenoord. The 19-year-old winger excelled during his loan spell at Feyenoord in the 2023/24 season and is now slated to participate in Newcastle’s pre-season activities, where manager Eddie Howe will evaluate his performance.
There is speculation that Minteh could be joined by Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida at St James’ Park. According to Dutch outlet AD, Newcastle, along with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United, are interested in the 23-year-old defender, who is expected to leave Feyenoord this summer after failing to secure a contract extension. Geertruida’s current contract expires in 2025, and he could be available for less than £28 million.
However, fitting Geertruida into Newcastle’s lineup could be challenging. Although versatile across the backline, he primarily plays as a right-back—a position where Newcastle already has Kieran Trippier and his prospective successor, Tino Livramento. Geertruida’s ability to play as a centre-back could be advantageous, especially with Newcastle needing reinforcements in that position after missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo.
Despite Minteh’s potential endorsement of Geertruida, it remains uncertain if they will both be at Newcastle next season, as another loan move for Minteh is a possibility.
