According to Gary Keown, John Bennett is at a critical juncture at Rangers. Keown, writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (page 96, 2 June), argues that for Bennett to maintain his influential role at Ibrox, the club needs to assemble a team capable of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Rangers are set to face teams like Lille, Fenerbahce, or Red Bull Salzburg in their quest for qualification.
Achieving qualification could bring in £40 million, which Keown considers essential for Rangers to stay competitive with Celtic.
Philippe Clement is tasked with guiding Rangers to the Champions League. While Keown acknowledges Bennett’s financial contributions, he questions Bennett’s ability to effectively run the club.
Keown believes Bennett’s position is under intense scrutiny, and failure to qualify for the Champions League will amplify that scrutiny. Fans are eager for Rangers to narrow the gap with Celtic next season, making the financial rewards of the Champions League crucial.
It’s clear that Philippe Clement’s team requires improvements, and the club needs funds to achieve this.
The possible opponents in the qualifiers are beatable, but the team needs reinforcements to succeed in those matches. Therefore, Bennett must do everything he can until August to help construct a squad capable of reaching the Champions League.
Once that is done, the pressure will shift to Clement and the players to perform on the field.
