“Shearer Fumes After Manchester United Provocation”
Alan Shearer has maintained that he was justified in responding to Erik ten Hag after their exchange following Manchester United’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City.
Ten Hag, in an interview with Gary Lineker and Shearer, argued that his team had been unfairly criticized throughout the season. Shearer countered, suggesting that if Manchester United had consistently played like they did in their 2-1 victory at Wembley, they wouldn’t have finished eighth in the league, emphasizing the necessity of criticism in their role as pundits.

Ten Hag acknowledged Shearer’s point, admitting they saw similar issues but attributed the team’s struggles to injuries. Shearer, speaking on “The Rest is Football” podcast, responded to backlash from Manchester United fans by reaffirming that criticism was warranted given the team’s poor performance for most of the season. He acknowledged Ten Hag’s right to defend his team but insisted that pundits must critique poor performances.
Shearer noted the team’s success in the FA Cup final but emphasized that their overall season performance justified the criticism they received.
