The Dallas Cowboys have had a peculiar offseason over the past few months. They haven’t really added much to their roster, and the majority of their big moves have been parting ways with a few key players.
The Cowboys coaching staff and front office appear content with the players they already have on their roster as they get ready to return to action in 2024, despite not making any changes this season.
Even though some of the organization’s higher-ups won’t acknowledge it to the public, Dallas does still have a lot of needs. Sadly, the Cowboys presently have very little cap room (just under $3.9 million, per OverTheCap.com), so if they decide to add more players before the 2024 season begins, they will have to rummage through the cheap players.
It was recently proposed that Dallas sign a player that is currently a free agent, someone who they could actually be able to pay.
In a story published on Monday, ESPN’s Matt Bowen tried to match some of the most prominent free agents still available with an NFL franchise. He envisions the Cowboys bringing in wide receiver Michael Thomas, a former member of the New Orleans Saints.
Now, Thomas would be a fantastic addition to Dallas’s receiver group if we were back in 2018 or 2019. In 2018 and 2019, Thomas was a first-team All-Pro for the Saints, and he won the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award in 2019.
He hasn’t ended a season with more than 448 receiving yards since that historic season, though, and it seems improbable that he will ever again play at such a high level.
However, he’s only thirty-one, so if signing him doesn’t come with a big price tag, the Cowboys should think about bringing the former wide receiver from the Saints into the roster this summer.
At the top of Dallas’ WR depth chart right now are Brandin Cooks and Ceedee Lamb. With the exception of these two, however, none of the team’s pass-catchers have much NFL experience; Thomas might potentially improve the position group in this regard.
In ten games with New Orleans in 2023, Thomas caught 39 catches for 448 yards and one touchdown. The Cowboys should be content with his level of output if he finishes the next season as a No. 3 receiver.
