Board confidant sends probe to fans over Moyes’ West Ham future

A Hammers board confidant has sent a probe to West Ham fans over David Moyes and the results will shock the owners.

With no wins in 2024 so far following the 3-0 defeat at Man United, David Moyes is seeing his West Ham future called into question once more.

The Hammers are winless in six games since the turn of the year.

And many West Ham fans remain unhappy with the style of play and approach.

There have been mitigating circumstances, though. Injuries and absences impacted performances and results in January.

Individual errors beyond Moyes’ control have proved costly in several games too.

Until the Man United defeat West Ham had lost just once in 11 matches.

But it says everything about the divide among fans over the manager that unrest has bubbled to the surface so quickly – just over a month on from a victory at Arsenal which ended 2023 on a high.

Speculation has been rife over Moyes’ future at West Ham.

Ahead of games against Man United and Arsenal, the Scot said talks to extend his contract are “well down the line” and he expects it to be sorted soon.

But that was met with grumbles from a section of supporters who believe West Ham need a change of approach.

Now a board confidant has sent a probe to West Ham fans over Moyes and the results will shock the owners.

Results will shock owners
Sean Whetstone counts majority owner David Sullivan and vice-chair Karren Brady among his close contacts.

Whetstone took to X in the wake of the defeat at Man United to ask West Ham season ticket holders whether they would renew if Moyes gets a new deal.

With ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ as options, Whetstone asked his near 50k following: “West Ham season ticket holders: With the news David Moyes is on the verge of signing a new contract to extend his stay at West Ham, assuming he does extend his contract do you plan to renew you season ticket?”

The response will certainly give Sullivan and co food for thought.

Because nearly 57% said they would not renew if Moyes is handed a new deal. That’s 2,850 of the 5,003 votes.

57% say they would not renew
It is pretty staggering given the extreme nature of the action suggested.

Of course there is no way to verify whether actual season ticket holders responded to the poll – it could quite literally have been any X user voting.

But the majority of Whetstone’s following are West Ham fans, so it at least gives an indication of the strength of feeling among some.

One thing that will always make owners sit up and take notice is the threat of income being impacted.

On the flip side, talk over Moyes’ future could die down as quickly as it has reignited.

If West Ham can get Lucas Paqueta fit and rediscover their form from before the turn of the year then it will dampen the noise around Moyes’ contract.

Although with Arsenal up next that will be easier said than done.
