Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite called best in England after Tottenham goal
Tim Sherwood has called Jarrad Branthwaite the best left-sided centre-back for England as he scored the equaliser for Everton v Tottenham.
Spurs looked like they would be running away from Goodison Park on Saturday, 3 February, with the three points, but Branthwaite scored a late equaliser to make it 2-2.
Ahead of the EUROs this summer, Sherwood and Leon Osman both wanted him to be in the starting eleven for Gareth Southgate’s starting eleven.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Sherwood said (03 February, 14:48): “I’m here with Leon Osman and we think you’re the best left-sided centre-back in the country and should be at the EUROs.”
Branthwaite for England starter?
The 21-year-old’s performance against Tottenham, where he scored a crucial late equaliser, showcased not only his defensive prowess but also his ability to contribute offensively.
At a young age, Branthwaite demonstrates remarkable composure and maturity in his defensive duties, often making timely interceptions and tackles and it comes as no surprise as he’s wanted by so many clubs.
Comparing Branthwaite to other potential options like Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi, and Ezri Konsa, Branthwaite stands out for his natural suitability for the left-sided centre-back role.
His positional awareness, coupled with his adeptness at carrying the ball out from the back, provides England with a versatile and reliable defensive option.
Moreover, the centre-back’s goal-scoring ability adds another dimension to his game, offering an additional threat during set-pieces and attacking transitions.
Considering the upcoming EUROs, where England will face formidable opponents, Branthwaite’s inclusion in the starting eleven could provide Southgate with a well-rounded defensive option that not only bolsters the backline but also contributes positively to the team’s attacking endeavours.
