With 10 days left on the January transfer window, the biggest question concerning Everton is regarding the future of Arnaut Danjuma.
Game-time has been in short supply for Danjuma since signing on loan from Villarreal in the summer and he now has the option of cutting short his stay at Goodison Park and join Lyon.
Whether the Blues will allow the Netherlands international is open to question, but you can imagine Sean Dyche will not want to let Jarrad Branthwaite, Abdoulaye Doucoure or Amadou Onana. The trio are all reportedly wanted by other clubs.
But it’s not all about potential outgoings. The Blues have now long been liked with a move for Real Betis winger Luis Henrique while new reports suggest they are also in the mix for Krasnodar striker Jhon Cordoba.
We’ll also have the latest developments in Everton’s appeal against their unprecedented 10-point deduction from the Premier League with our understanding being that it could start this week – and 777 Partners’ attempts to take over the club.

Rio Ferdinand on David Moyes
There’s been a fair bit of talk on this blog today about Frank Lampard, given it’s one year since he was sacked by Everton.
But Rio Ferdinand has been talking about another old Blues boss, David Moyes, who swapped Goodison Park for Old Trafford and Manchester United in 2013.
Like Lampard, it did not work out, as he was sacked after a 10-month tenure that included defeats at home and away to his former club Everton.
Speaking to the Obi One Podcast, ex-United defender Ferdinand said: “As a professional I wanted him [Moyes] to do well and you’re giving them that time and the chance, definitely. But there’s a few things you see that aren’t the same. I think the biggest thing for me was that there was always too much focus on our opponents in training. We’re Man United, they’re meant to worry about us more.
“What that does to our mindset is there’s an element of fear here and that filters through to the team and to the young players. All we’re doing is talking about what are they going to do, but it should be about – what are we going to do.
“That element there, I thought there needed to be a bigger shift from thinking like an Everton manager to thinking like a Man United manager. It needed to be how champions think.
“But I do actually still feel sorry for David Moyes because of the shoes he had to fill, coming to Man United from Everton is a completely different ball game. Even (Jose) Mourinho may have struggled coming in after Sir Alex (Ferguson), so to think it was an easy run for Moyes was crazy.”

Mason Holgate latest
Mason Holgate is on loan at Southampton but, as we reported on this blog yesterday, it’s a move that’s not worked out for the Everton defender personally.
Now it did appear at one stage last week that he could be heading to Sheffield United, who like the Blues are battling to stay in the Premier League.
There were reports that the loan collapsed, but Football Insider are reporting that Holgate remains a top target for Blades boss Chris Wilder, along with Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall.

Kalvin Phillips is going to…. West Ham United
What was I saying about a very quiet January transfer window? Well, it appears it’s just livened up.
Kalvin Phillips, the out-of-favour Manchester City and England midfielder, had been tentatively linked with a move to Everton.
But it appears Phillips is now on his way to David Moyes’ West Ham United, with Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, the two giants of the transfer window, claimining a deal has been agreed.

Tottenham Hotspur still want Jarrad Branthwaite
It’s been a very quiet January transfer window so far. It’s almost as if Premier League clubs have had a look at Everton’s unprecedented spending rules punishment and thought, ‘we best rein it in’.
But one outfit who have been busy are Tottenham Hotspur, who have brought in Timo Werner on loan and signed Radu Dragusin for £25m from Genoa, who are owned by a certain 777 Partners.
Dragusin is a highly-rated centre-back but a report from MailOnline suggests they are still interested in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, whose list of admirers also is said to include Real Madrid and Manchester United.
Simon Jones writes: “Tottenham may have signed Radu Dragusin but that hasn’t prevented them from maintaining a watching brief on Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
“Tottenham were thought to have dropped interest after signing Dragusin this month but they remain the hunt as they prepare to build their squad further in the summer. Branthwaite’s homegrown status is another attraction for Premier League sides.”
The Blues recently tied Branthwaite down to a new deal contracting him to the club until 2027, which shold put the club in a strong position if and when suitors come calling. But with 777’s takeover attempt dragging on, and Farhad Moshiri clearly wanting out, there appears so much uncertainty financially.
Here’s hoping Everton aren’t tested with a big bid this month for Branthwaite, who has been one of the revelations of the season.

Luiz Henrique to Everton? David Moyes could help…
Regular readers of this blog will know by now that Real Betis winger Luiz Henrique is one of the players who has been linked to Everton during this month’s transfer window.
Well, ABC Sevilla (via Sport Witness) report that former Blues boss David Moyes could play a role in making it happen.
As they suggest, should Betis sign Pablo Fornals from Moyes’ West Ham United, then that could open the door for Henrique to move. Potentially to Everton.
However, there is an issue, as Sport Witness explain: “The big issue has been that Betis want a full sale and Everton can only offer a loan and that remains the case. The Spanish side would need to sell this month to be able to definitively move for Fornals and a loan exit would mean a move for the West Ham midfielder would not be so clear.
“The idea to sign him is there, though, and so is the need to get rid of someone first, potentially giving Everton their shot at Henrique before the end of the window.”
We’ll see.

Amadou Onana and Arsenal update
As Joe states in our previous post, it looks like Newcastle United like the look of Amadou Onana. What we already know is that Arsenal are long-time admirers of the Everton midfielder.
But a new report from Het Nieuwsblad in Belgium (via Sport Witness) suggests that Arseanl do not have the finances in place to do a deal this month.
The report states that talks with the Blues “were/are ongoing” and that Onana is considering a move to the Emirates but that the Gunners have “limitations” on the amount they can spend.

As Saudi clubs burst into life, what impact could they have on Everton?
Hello everyone, Joe Thomas checking in this lunchtime. As Paul refers to in the previous post, I have written a piece on a potential issue that could arise from Everton’s profit and sustainability cases. A transfer ban is one of the sanctions open to both the panel that could amend the initial punishment on appeal, and the one that will hear the second case. Given that the first panel ruled a financial penalty was insufficient, a transfer ban is a genuine alternative. With this summer intended to be one of transition at Everton that could be more damaging than a low-end points deduction.]
Anyway, there is a long way to go on that front and fingers crossed Everton can make headway in their appeal. In the meantime it remains quiet around Everton but there is one chain of events that could lead to activity impacting the club.
Saudi side Al-Shabab are in talks with Newcastle United over Miguel Almiron. If a move materialises The Telegraph claim Newcastle may use the sale to launch a bid for Amadou Onana. I have covered his situation extensively in relation to Arsenal’s interest earlier in the window – essentially that Everton benchmark his value around that of Moises Caicedo, who moved to Chelsea in a £115m package in the summer. The club could be forced to come down from that depending on the club’s financial outlook but it is hard to see Onana going without it being for a figure that would be out of the ordinary for the January spending seen so far.
What is interesting is the potential impact of the Saudi Pro League sides – whether it be through interest in Abdoulaye Doucoure or a move for Almiron that could spark interest in Onana – there is a chance the activity of those clubs could make the final week of the month busier for Everton.

Points deduction appeal latest – and new sanction fear
Unless you’ve been living under the rock, you will know that Everton were hit with a 10-point deduction in Novemrber after being found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
They have appealed against that decision and Joe Thomas wrote over the weekend that the Blues “hope to make progress against the deduction during an appeal hearing that is expected to start this month”.
With just 10 days left in January, that means the appeal could start as early as this week.
There is no getting away from how crucial the outcome of it will be – especially since Everton have also been hit with a second charge of breaching the top-flight’s spending rules.
And it’s that second charge, and the sanction that could follow if, like the first, it is proven, that our Blues correspondent has been writing about this morning.
It’s a sobering but essential read.

Jhon Cordoba surprise link to Everton
Nizaar Kinsella, a fine journalist for the Evening Standard, yesterday reported that Fulham were exploring a loan deal for Krasnodar striker Jhon Cordoba.
And he added that Everton, along with Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, were also interested in the 30-year-old Colombia international, who has scored 11 goals in 20 games for the Russian Premier League outfit this season.
Is another centre-forward what the Blues need?

At 30, Cordoba would not fit the preferred profile of a young talent Everton could develop. It would also mean the club bypassing a forward with Premier League experience who has repeatedly been on the club’s radar – Che Adams. Adams is younger than Cordoba, out of contract in the summer (Cordoba is under contract until 2025) and knows the Premier League. None of this is to rule out Everton looking at the Colombia international, but it is hard to see how he would be a priority in the remaining days of this window.

Arnaut Danjuma and Villarreal ‘frustrated’
Anyone else surprised that Arnaut Danjuma didn’t start, let alone get on, against Crystal Palace last Wednesday?
With Dwight McNeil just back from an injury that looked a lot worse than it was, surely this was the perfect opportunity to give Danjuma another go.
However, Sean Dyche had other ideas and you cannot really argue with the Everton manager’s decision as his side won 1-0 – albeit with a below-par performance – and the player he put on before the Dutchman, youngster Lewis Dobbin, was very lively off the bench.
But with Lyon clearly an option for Danjuma before the transfer window closes, it does beg the question whether he may push for the move in the final 10 days of the transfer window in order to get the game time he wants.
And late last night Mail Online reported that the 26-year-old is “frustrated” with his situation. Simon Jones writes: “Everton face a crucial decision over Arnaut Danjuma’s immediate future with the player and his parent club Villarreal understood to be growing frustrated at his lack of game time.
“Lyon, who are also exploring an audacious move to bring Karim Benzema back to France from Saudi Arabia side Al Ittihad, have made it clear they would like to take Danjuma for the rest of the season but there is no break clause in Villarreal’s loan arrangement with Everton.
“Manager Sean Dyche has underlined that despite Lyon’s interest, the Holland international is currently contracted to the Goodison club and has played a key role in recent games.
“Indeed, Danjuma started the last two matches, has figured in 18 in total, and scored twice.
However, it is the lack of those starts and the position of a midfielder, rather than his preferred left wing, that is causing issues with Villarreal, who are concerned the value of their asset is diminishing.”

On this day exactly one year ago, Frank Lampard was sacked by Everton.
He led the Blues to safety after Rafa Benitez’s disastrous tenure but things went badly wrong in what was supposed to be his first full season in charge of the Blues, departing the club with a record of 12 wins, 8 draws and 24 defeats in 44 games.

Cordoba competition
Everton will reportedly face competition from Fulham and a number of Premier League clubs for the signature of Jhon Cordoba.
According to the Evening Standard, Marco Silva’s side are exploring the option to loan the 30-year-old. Any temporary deal would also apparently contain a £7 million option to buy the player outright.
Cordoba is currently playing his football at Russian club Krasnodar and has scored 11 goals in 20 games.

Can Uzun speaks out on Everton transfer speculation
We reported on this blog yesterday that Everton are supposedly one of the clubs interested in signing Can Uzun, the 18-year-old Turkey youth international who is making quite the impression in 2. Bundesliga for FC Nürnberg this season.
Uzun scored twice for Nürnberg following their 3-0 home win over Hansa Rostock on Saturday to take his tally for the season up to 11 goals in 18 appearances.
And now the teenager has spoken about the speculation, which has also seen him linked with Brighton & Hove Albion and Bayern Munich…
It’s good when people talk about me and I want it to stay that way. But you can’t even think about something like that on the pitch
You can only focus on what is happening on the pitch now. As I said, I’m focusing entirely on now and the season with Nürnberg. And we’ll see the rest at the end of the season.
Sport Witness state that Uzun is expected to bring in at least €10m to the second division German club when he leaves them next summer.

Latest on Everton target Sam Tickle
Joe Thomas wrote earlier this month that young Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle has been on Everton’s radar for some time – but that the Warrington-born 21-year-old is now on the watchlist of a host of Premier League clubs after an impressive start to the season that has saw him break into the England Under-21 squad.
There is a belief at Wigan they have a player whose value is now at eight figures. As it stands, Everton, who appear strong in the goalkeeping department given the recent performances of No.2 Joao Virginia, are unlikely to be able to compete in serious bidding wars, even if they did follow up their interest.
But regardless, Wigan boss Shaun Maloney says there have been no bids so far this month. Speaking to Wigan Today, he simply said: “No… and let’s hope it stays that way.”

Abdoulaye Doucoure update
You’ll no doubt be aware now that Fabrizio Romano reported over the weekend that Abdoulaye Doucoure is one of the top targets for Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq after Jordan Henderson’s exit.
But after that tweet, another emerged, from sports broadcaster Ben Jacobs, who has good connections in the Middle East, in which he suggested Al-Nassr’s Seko Fofana was actually Al Ettifaq’s No.1 target.
And now Jacobs has given an update…
There has been no suggestion that Doucoure, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, would want to leave Everton, who equally would be loathe to let the key man go.

Mason Holgate latest
Mason Holgate is on loan at Southampton. But it’s not going well.
For the player, not Southampton, who are now up to second in the Championship after they won 3-1 at Swansea City on Saturday to stretch their unbeaten run to 21 matches. Holgate has only started three of those matches after losing his place in the team.
It has led to speculation that he could move on during the January transfer window and last week there were reports that he was on his way to Everton’s Premier League relegation rivals only for the loan move to collapse on Friday.
Now Saints boss Russell Martin has had his say. Speaking after the victory at his former club Swansea, Martin told the Daily Echo: “Yesterday (on Friday)? No, he was training with us.
“Other than that, I don’t know. He trained with us so that is all the clarity you need.
“If he got to the hotel with us and managed to find his way his way to Sheffield and back in time he has done very well.
“No. He was here with us, he was in the squad. He is probably pretty annoyed he has not played as much as he has.
“But he is a great character, really good with the group, vocal in the right way, and has a lot of fun.
“There is a week or whatever there is left of silly season. We will see where he is after that.”

Moise Kean on the move
It’s fair to say that Moise Kean’s time at Everton didn’t work out – four goals in 39 appearances is testament to that.
A loan spell at Paris Saint-Germain was much more productive, netting 17 times in 41 games alongside Kylian Mbappe and Co, but since returning to Juventus on a loan deal that became permanent, he hasn’t hit the same heights.
And it appears the 23-year-old Italy international is on the move again – this time to La Liga, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Everton transfer gamble pays off
It came as a surprise when Everton did not seek to replace Asmir Begovic in the summer. The common consensus was there wasn’t many better back-up goalkeepers in the Premier League.
But it’s now clear how much faith the Blues had in Joao Virginia, who kept his second clean sheet in as many matches when starring in the 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay win at home to Crystal Palace last Wednesday.
It will be interesting to see whether Virginia also starts in this Saturday’s fourth-round tie against Luton Town at Goodison Park. But perhaps Sean Dyche’s comments after the Palace victory were telling.
“I think he’s moved on a long way this season even though you haven’t seen him,” said the Everton boss. “I think from how he trains, how he goes about it with his professionalism, his understanding of the team and how it works, he’s listened intently in meetings, working, watched and has absorbed it I think.
“That’s paid him back because I thought he was very good at Palace and I thought he was good again tonight when called upon. He made very clear decisions, made a good save in the first half – I’m not sure whether it’s going in but it’s a fast reaction save – and then the one at the end when he spreads, he doesn’t go too far over the front post, he stays inside of his goal-line, across quick and makes a good save.
“I’m pleased for him, he’s a top pro as well. He’s good around the group.”

Leighton Baines on FA Youth Cup defeat
Everton crashed out of the FA Youth Cup yesterday after going down 2-0 at home to an impressive Chelsea side who emerged triumphant despite playing most of the match with 10 men.
Joe Thomas was at Walton Hall Park for us and gave his verdict on the match, in case you missed it.
And now Everton U18s boss – and Goodison Park great – Leighton Baines has been speaking about his side’s loss, to the club’s official website.
Obviously, it’s disappointing – especially playing against 10 men,” he acknowledged. “We knew the game would be a challenge, but with the sending off, it turned into a completely different challenge. We were trying to find a way through a more reserved opposition, who have still got amazing quality on the pitch, and can be clinical and ruthless in transition.
A sending off will always change a game, but we know Chelsea are one of the best teams in the country with some of the best players in the country. They had to adapt and evolve which they did well, and likewise, we prepared for high pressure and being pressed all over the pitch, and it ended up looking very different.
I think both teams adapted, and we looked comfortable on the ball, but lacked a cutting edge.
I think in the end, that’s what prevailed – them being clinical in the final third, and us not having that cutting edge. We didn’t manage to find a way through a body of players in a mid to low block and probably didn’t have the quality in the final action that they showed.

Points deduction appeal
Everton return to action on Saturday when they welcome Premier League relegation rivals Luton Town to Goodison Park for a FA Cup fourth-round clash.
But there could be an even bigger match starting this week for the Blues.

Kevin Thelwell braced for interest in four players
That’s what our Everton FC correspondent Joe Thomas is reporting this morning.
Joe writes: “The January transfer window could hold late intrigue for Everton as it enters its final stages.
“While there has been drama off the pitch it has been a quiet month so far in terms of deals – as director of football Kevin Thelwell said should be expected.
“But only so much of what happens is within Everton’s control and the club could get swept up in a late flurry of activity if the window bursts into life.
“The two big questions going into the next week and a half are over Arnaut Danjuma and Abdoulaye Doucoure, players who are both important for different reasons.”
Joe goes on to write: “Interest remains in both Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana but a deal for either would involve the type of numbers that are yet to be seen during this month. Both are of immense value to Everton at a time the club cannot afford to be complacent over its survival ambitions but might attract an opportunistic approach from a club that believes this window may present the chance to strike a bargain over an emerging talent while uncertainty continues to dog Everton.”

Ben Godfrey is a wanted man
And let’s start with some transfer speculation.
At one stage Ben Godfrey looked like being a mainstay of the Everton defence for years.
But after some rotten luck, and this season the emergence of Jarrad Branthwaite, he is currently struggling for game time. While he impressed when being parachuted into the side for the 2-0 win at Burnley before Christmas, that remains just one of two full appearances he has made in the 2023-24 campaign.
And with just 18 months left on his contract, Everton could have a decision to make if any interest comes forward in the next 10 days.
And, according to calciomercato.it, the 26-year-old is on the radar of Italian giants AC Milan, who have recent history of bringing English and other Premier League players to the San Siro.
Godfrey was previously linked with two more Serie A clubs, Atalanta and Roma – the latter before Jose Mourinho was sacked.
And this latest report says the two-capped England international is also wanted by Sheffield United and Leeds United.
This could be one to keep an eye on.

A 79th-minute penalty from James Ward-Prowse seemed to settle the contest in the Hammers’ favour.
And worse was to follow for the rock-bottom Blades when former Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster was sent off in the 93rd minute for a poor tackle following a VAR check.
West Ham, too, finished with 10 men after Vladimir Coufal picked up a second booking in the 97th minute. And moments later Sheffield United were handed a lifeline when West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola fouled Oli McBurnie in the box.
Areola hurt himself in the process and was replaced by Lukasz Fabianski, who could do little to prevent former Chester FC loanee McBurnie from firing home from the spot, with nearly 103 minutes on the clock.
The Hammers then had another penalty appeal turned down before the final whistle thankfully brought an end to the chaos.
The result means the Blades are now seven points adrift of 17th-placed Everton and safety, having played the same amout of matches

Neal Maupay hailed
He has netted just one goal in 32 appearances at Everton.
But it’s safe to say Neal Maupay has now discovered his scoring touch back at his old club Brentford.
The striker scored a brilliant winner for the Bees against Nottingham Forest last night to make it three goals in as many matches and five in 17 appearances since returning to west London.
And while the headlines were grabbed by the returning Ivan Toney, Brentford boss Thomas Frank was quick to pay tribute to the on-loan Everton man after the 3-2 victory.

No-one can do anything on their own in life, if you want to achieve something big, you can’t be alone.
Ivan is one 11th of the team and if the 10 others are not performing, it doesn’t help. We need them all to perform together.
Another one to highlight is Neal Maupay. The way he took his winning goal was very good. And the way he has come into the club is fantastic. We know what he is capable of, but five goals and three assists is impressive.
It’s clear that they have got an eye for each other and they connect well. I like it.
