Memphis Grizzlies guard Marcus Smart has sustained a severe right ring finger injury and will be sidelined for approximately six weeks.
Smart suffered the injury against the Dallas Mavericks on January 9.
The Grizzlies acquired Smart from the Boston Celtics last offseason in a three-team trade with the Washington Wizards. Smart has appeared in 20 games this season. He’s averaging 14.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.1 steals and 0.3 blocks while shooting 43.0% from the field, 31.3% from beyond the arc and 76.8% from the free-throw line.
The Grizzlies are in 13th place in the Western Conference standings. They will likely miss the playoffs since superstar point guard Ja Morant is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Morant underwent season-ending shoulder surgery today.
Smart has career averages of 10.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.4 blocks with the Celtics and Grizzlies. He has made three All-Defensive teams.
Along with Morant and Smart, the Grizzlies are without Derrick Rose, Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke. It has been a difficult season for Memphis injury-wise.
Smart is making $18.6 million this season. He signed a four-year, $76.5 million extension with the Celtics in August 2021.
Before Smart got hurt against the Mavericks, some people around the NBA listed the veteran as a possible trade candidate for contending teams. It’s doubtful a playoff team will trade for Smart now since he’s going to be out for six weeks. The trade deadline is on February 9.

Now, under a month until the NBA’s trade window closes, rumors continue to bounce around the league about every team’s approach heading into the big day. One of the most prominent names mentioned to make a move throughout the season so far has been none other than the Sacramento Kings. After their narrow first-round exit to the Golden State Warriors a year ago, the talk surrounding the Kings has focused on their ability to add another star player to the mix. While the trio of De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and Keegan Murray is fantastic, Sacramento has the means to add even more. Among the candidates to add to the Kings roster, Zach LaVine has consistently stuck out as a prime possibility. It’s no secret the Chicago Bulls have been open to a move involving the 2x All-Star, and he could effectively add a strong offensive burst to the backcourt with Fox in Sacramento. Now, we’ve begun to get a few more developments surrounding a potential deal. According to a report from Michael Scotto from HoopsHype, the Kings held discussions with Chicago earlier in the season for LaVine with Kevin Huerter and Harrison Barnes being at the center of Sacramento’s package: “There had also been some Zach LaVine chatter a little bit earlier in the season. I had heard the two names that came up there from Sacramento during trade conversations were Kevin Huerter and Harrison Barnes. From Chicago’s side, There is a level of interest in Huerter for sure. To my understanding, they’ve done background intel on him trying to figure out what’s going on there and why he has struggled a little bit this year. He’s a player that they’ve liked. That’s a team (Chicago) that doesn’t want to rebuild. Before this regime, Vivek Ranadivé was there when they tried to give LaVine an offer sheet many years ago.” During his 2023-24 campaign, LaVine has averaged 20.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 44.6/34.0/85.3 splits. Adding his explosiveness to an already lethal Kings offensive unit would create an even more difficult defensive assignment for opposing teams. If the Bulls weren’t interested in a total teardown of the roster, a swap to bring in Huerter and Barnes could provide two win-now players to help lift this team a bit in the standings. Chicago is currently 9th in the Eastern Conference, sitting four games back from the eighth seed. The challenge comes for the Kings when handling the hefty contract of LaVine, who is inked to a $178 million deal to extend until the summer of 2027. If Sacramento makes the splash to add him to the roster in addition to the deals of Fox and Sabonis, it effectively creates a tricky cap space bind for the foreseeable future. As we get closer to the deadline, expect to hear more traction involving a deal with LaVine, whether it be with the Kings or without.

Many in league circles believe the Los Angeles Chargers and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh have a mutual interest. “They want Harbaugh, and he wants them,” an anonymous coach said, per The Athletic’s Mike Sando. “So I would think they would get that done. The Raiders want Harbaugh, too, so the Raiders could outbid them, but I don’t think that will happen.” Sando added Raiders interim HC Antonio Pierce has earned the locker room’s trust, which could lead to him landing the job. Plus, L.A. already has a franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert, making it a more attractive destination. The Chargers have avoided hiring strong-willed HCs like Harbaugh. However, one league executive thinks they should go all in to restore confidence throughout the organization. “They have been cheap, but they know they have to do something, and they have opened their wallet for players. They have the new stadium, the money it brings in,” the exec. said, per Sando. “There is no one there in ownership that would keep Harbaugh from taking the job. They might get cold feet after they meet with Harbaugh, because of his personality, but they have to do something for the city, the fan base, the players, everyone.” Los Angeles (5-12) was one of the league’s most disappointing teams this season. It missed the playoffs, ranking 21st in the league in points scored (20.4) and 24th in points allowed (23.4). Employing a passionate coach with a proven track record could help the team turn it around. Harbaugh served as 49ers HC from 2011-14, posting a 44-19-1 record and guiding San Francisco to a Super Bowl Bowl XLVII appearance. He’s also led Michigan to three straight College Football Playoff trips.

Star Dallas Cowboys pass-rusher Micah Parsons sent a risky and desperate message to the NFL before their team’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers. The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up to take on the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the playoffs and are expecting detrimental weather. The Steelers most recently took down the Baltimore Ravens on the road, where the weather was rainy and frigid. They should be expecting even worse weather in Western New York. The weather is expected to be so bad that officials are preparing for the possibility of the game being relocated. Steelers’ Playoff Game Could Be Relocated The weather in Buffalo for the Steelers’ game on Sunday is expected to be atrocious, with temperatures being in the mid 20s, with 20-30 mile per hour winds. There is a possibility of lake effect snow, which occurs when a cold air mass moves over a lake with warmer water, creating snow fall. Officials are preparing for this instance by making plans to relocate the game to Cleveland, if the weather is too poor.
