Having been struck with a ten-point deduction back in November, they wasted no time in outlining their intention to challenge the decision, issuing a condemning video in which they seemed aghast that such a conclusion had been reached.

Having spent little and sold often, they were surely making huge steps towards regaining sustainability. And yet, with the punishment, they are now staring down the barrel of a third straight relegation dogfight.

Writing for The Athletic, answering queries from the public regarding Everton, Paddy Boyland was questioned about when an outcome might appear from the hearing.

He would write: ‘I’ve not been given a date for the appeal yet, but we are told Everton’s case is high on the Premier League’s list and it is expected to be heard before the end of the season.’

He then goes on to note: ‘Just about everyone seems to think the punishment was too high, but we are at the discretion of a (new) panel.

‘Again, the sooner, the better. The longer this goes on, the more the integrity of the competition is cast into doubt.’

However, following that flashpoint frustrations have grown, especially given at one point they may well have been on for a European push had they kept their ten points.

After all, wins on the road to Crystal Palace and West Ham United marked an impressive feat, and although they suffered a setback against Manchester United, it would only inspire finer form as they won their following four Premier League matches to rise from the relegation zone.

Although having faltered since, slumping to 17th in the league, for many that is far from a fair representation of their campaign thus far.

Had they kept what they had earned, they would currently be sitting on 26 points, a mere three points behind Newcastle United.
