‘He can’t defend’… Pundit says Tottenham have a £39m player who is useless defensively

Pedro Porro is very quickly winning people around at Tottenham.

The Spaniard had a rough start at Spurs under Antonio Conte last season, but he’s been much improved this term.

Porro has been utterly brilliant as a marauding right-back in this all-out-attack Spurs side.

However, as always, the £39m man still has work to do in certain areas of his game.

With all due respect, Porro isn’t exactly the greatest when it comes to defending, and you can tell that he much prefers getting forward.

Speaking on Off The Ball, Keith Treacy has been discussing Porro’s ability and style of play, and he says that he’s still not a fan of the right-back due to the fact he doesn’t think Porro can defend.

“I don’t know if he walks into the Arsenal team. Pedro Porro is a good footballer, obviously, he plays in the Premier League, he’s a decent footballer, but he’s not a good right-back, he can’t defend. I’ve said this about Trent Alexander-Arnold, people say he’s the best right-back in the world, but he can’t defend. If your name is going to be on the right-back position you have to be able to defend in some capacity and I don’t think Pedro Porro can do that. If I was a coach going up against Spurs I would say to isolate him, run at him all day long,” Treacy said.

Getting better

It would’ve been absolutely fair to level this criticism at Porro last season, but, in recent weeks, the right-back has improved so much on this front.

Yes, he’s not perfect, but he’s not exactly a liability at the back.

It would’ve been so easy for Spurs to collapse defensively amid their recent injury crisis, but due to a fantastic team effort, they’ve come away with four wins from their last five games.

Porro isn’t an exemplary defender, but he is improving that area of his game slowly but surely.
