Mason Holgate ‘very likely’ to return to Everton with Southampton loan set to be terminated early
Mason Holgate is “very likely” to return to Everton from his loan spell at Southampton in January after failing to make an impression at St Mary’s Stadium.
The defender joined on a season-long loan in the summer but has made just four starts in the Championship so far this campaign.
And according to The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell (28 December), it is now very likely that his loan gets cut short in January with the Saints eyeing up alternatives in the market.

“A loan move for Sekou Mara is a possibility while Mason Holgate is very likely to return to Everton,” he wrote.
No future
Holgate admitted in a recent interview that when Sean Dyche arrived at the club they had a very honest conversation and the manager made it clear to him that he wasn’t his type of defender.
That’s when a decision was made to allow him to leave and find football elsewhere, which is why he went to Southampton. But he has failed to make any sort of impact there, despite it being down a level from the Premier League.
So if he can’t make it in the Championship, there is absolutely no reason to believe that he will return to Goodison Park to an Everton team which is actually defending quite well this season and force his way into the plans.
Another loan move away would make sense but finding someone willing to take him on with his Premier League wages could be an issue, but ultimately that’s not our issue.
If he stays he’ll be an emergency backup option for the rest of the season before moving on in the summer, and if he moves on then happy days.
