Newcastle United fearful of 10-point deduction at St James’ Park after Everton financial development
Newcastle United are reluctant to splash the cash in the January transfer window on the back of the 10-point deduction handed out to Everton, according to The Telegraph.
The newspaper reported on its website on Wednesday (27 December) that the punishment given to the Toffees for breaching the Premier League’s spending rules has made every top-flight club “wary of falling into the same trap”.
It added that any big-money signings are, therefore, “unlikely” for the Magpies in January as they look to avoid suffering the same fate as the Blues.
Makes sense
It makes complete sense for Newcastle to be approaching the transfer window with great caution as the ruling handed out to Everton will have made some clubs nervous.
Any overspending by other Premier League sides will now mean they surely have to be treated in the same way as the Toffees after a precedence has been set.
It will make it incredibly difficult for the Magpies to really strengthen their squad as they look to get into Europe again next season, meaning they will have to move players on if they want to make any new signings.
It’s unlikely to be a busy transfer window for the Toffees due to their financial situation, with Sean Dyche proving in the first half of the campaign that he has more than enough at his disposal to ensure this is a successful season at Goodison Park.
But it doesn’t mean that other clubs may not look to take advantage of the Blues’ off-field struggles as a couple of their star players received some interest during the summer transfer window.
