Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham have a 24-year-old who’s on ‘another level’

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has described Pedro Porro as a “good footballer” with quality in “abundance”.

The Spurs boss was speaking to football.london ahead of Tottenham heading to Nottingham Forest for their Premier League game on Friday night.

Porro joined Spurs on loan from Sporting Lisbon in January before signing for the Lilywhites permanently for £39million in the summer.

The 24-year-old took a little time to find his feet at Tottenham, but he’s now flying high in a Spurs outfit reinvigorated under Postecoglou.

The Spain international has six assists from 15 Premier League outings this season, four of which have come in the last five Spurs matches.

Indeed, a report has been doing the rounds suggesting Real Madrid are kicking themselves for not working harder to sign Porro and allowing Tottenham to win the race.

‘I was never concerned about Pedro’

Alasdair Gold asked Postecoglou how early he identified that Porro was perfect for his system, considering he was a player he effectively inherited.

“He’s a good footballer,” he replied of the £85,000-a-week (Spotrac) ace. “Most coaches will tell you that they want good footballers.

“I didn’t see anything there [that was an issue], a lot of people have always said that, especially with the way I get my full-backs to play, that I haven’t been at a club yet where the full-backs haven’t adapted, whether that was at Celtic, or at Yokohama since I’ve been going down

“Very few have struggled with it. I think it’s just probably the uniqueness of what they do that takes people aback a little bit, but in terms of the functionality of it, we try to make it as simple for the guys in that position.

“Then the quality we have both with Pedro and Destiny, they take it to another level altogether, because it’s one thing for me to tell them to move into the areas we want them to move into but then they need to show that quality and they’ve got it in abundance.

“I was never concerned about Pedro. I thought that with him and Emerson we were well covered on the right-hand side.”

Pedro Porro a key player for Tottenham Hotspur

It’s great to see Porro playing so well for Tottenham. He needed a little time to acclimatise to a new team, league and country, but now he’s fully up and running.

In the early stages of the season, Porro was part of one of the best back lines in the Premier League. He shone alongside Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie.

Even though Tottenham’s back line has had to change due to injuries and suspensions, and is still missing the injured Van de Ven, Porro has still been playing well.
