£70m Liverpool transfer target ruled out for the rest of the season

Cheick Doucoure is reportedly set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious Achilles injury on Saturday, with Liverpool linked with the midfielder this summer.

The Crystal Palace superstar was stretchered off this weekend in the Eagles’ 2-1 loss to Luton Town, with Doucoure one of the south London side’s most important players.

Strongly linked with a £70m move to Liverpool in the summer, it might now be some time before Doucoure is back in action, with the Daily Mail reporting that the midfielder is out for the season.

With Liverpool looking to sign a midfielder yet again in the January transfer window, Doucoure could have been an exceptional addition for the Reds in the winter market.

However, with the 23-year-old now expected to be out for at least six months, signing Doucoure will no longer be an option for the Reds heading into 2024.

Indeed, the Mali international would have suited what Liverpool are looking for to a tee, yet the Anfield side will now have to explore other options for January.

Doucoure has been sensational for Palace since joining the Eagles last season from RC Lens, and this injury could now have come at a worse time for the midfielder.

With Liverpool interested in signing the 23-year-old and Palace looking to maintain their Premier League status, Doucoure being out for the season is a lose-lose for everyone.

Moreover, given the nature of the injury, there’s no telling what sort of player Doucoure will now become once he is fully fit and back in Premier League action.

An Achilles injury is arguably one of the worst problems a player can pick up, and for an athletic midfielder like Doucoure, he will be praying he doesn’t lose too much pace when he returns.
