Source: Vikings planning to sign linebacker Anthony Barr to practice squad

A source confirmed to the Pioneer Press that the Vikings are planning to sign Barr to the practice squad in the wake of linebacker Jordan Hicks needing to have emergency surgery on his lower leg. It’s unclear how much time the 31-year-old Barr will need to get in playing shape considering he hasn’t played in the NFL this season.

Originally selected by the Vikings with the No. 9 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Barr played the better part of a decade in Minnesota, emerging as a fan favorite under former head coach Mike Zimmer. He was matchup nightmare for opposing offenses thanks to his rare combination of size and speed.

Not only did role play a key role for the Vikings during his tenure, he was a Pro Bowl selection from 2015-18. After the Vikings decided to part ways with him, Barr played last season with the Dallas Cowboys, finishing with 58 tackles, a sack, and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks was able to return to Sunday’s win over the Saints after injuring his shin early in the game, but the issue wound up landing him in the hospital after the game.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell said at a Monday press conference that the team’s medical personnel decided Hicks should go to the hospital because of concerns about swelling in his leg. Hicks had a procedure to “address some of the complications from that direct trauma to his lower leg” and relieve pressure from the area.

O’Connell added that Hicks is doing well, but is likely to miss Week 11 as a result of the injury.

O’Connell said that Ivan Pace could take over Hicks’ role relaying defensive play calls against the Broncos next weekend, but that the team is still working out its plan for playing without Hicks.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Vikings plan to sign Anthony Barr as a free agent. Barr was a Vikings first-round pick in 2014 and he was a four-time Pro Bowler during his eight years with the club.

Barr moved on to play for the Cowboys last season. He had 58 tackles, a sack, and two fumble recoveries in 14 regular season games and nine more tackles in the postseason.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said rookie Ivan Pace will likely wear the green dot on his helmet while Hicks is out of action. Troy Dye, Nick Vigil, and Brian Asamoah are also on the roster at linebacker.

The Warriors could be without star point guard Steph Curry during their second NBA In-Season Tournament game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.

The nine-time NBA All-Star is listed as questionable with right knee soreness for the regular-season matchup at Chase Center — the second of back-to-back games against Anthony Edwards and Co. after Golden State dropped the first meeting by a score of 116-110 on Sunday.

Curry’s potential absence comes at an inopportune time as the Warriors try to play their way out of a three-game losing streak. The 35-year-old, unsurprisingly, has served as Golden State’s main source of offense through their 11 games so far, which was evident as he outscored the rest of the Warriors’ starters 38-33 in Sunday’s loss.

McIlroy details Ryder Cup row, has choice words for Cantlay

As Shane Lowry riled up his Ryder Cup teammates in the European locker room that Saturday night in Rome, Rory McIlroy found himself getting angrier and angrier – to the point where he had to be talked out of going straight to the opposing locker room in a rash attempt to sort things out.

In a recent interview with The Irish Independent, McIlroy and Lowry offered more detail into the events surrounding McIlroy’s dustup with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava.

“Here’s what angered me,” McIlroy explained during his sit-down with Paul Kimmage. “My relationship with Cantlay is average at best. We don’t have a ton in common and see the world quite differently. But when I saw he was getting stick on the 17th and 18th greens I tried to quieten the crowd for him. And I don’t think [Matt] Fitz[patrick] and I were afforded the same opportunity to try and hole those putts to halve the match. I hit a decent putt, but I under-read it basically, and Fitz hit a good putt but left it short, right in the jaws.

… I shook Joe’s hand, and Patrick’s hand. Those three putts he made on 16, 17 and 18 were fantastic, and under that pressure, to give your team a glimmer of hope going into Sunday was big balls. So, all respect to him. There was a bit of argy-bargy at the back of the 18th green with Fred Couples and Thomas Bjorn — and that’s fine — but as I’m walking back to the locker room, I can feel this red mist coming over me: ‘No! That wasn’t right.’”

After Lowry had to separate McIlroy and Justin Thomas’ caddie, Bones Mackay, in Marco Simone’s valet line, McIlroy ran into Brooks Koepka’s caddie, Ricky Elliott, and instructor, Claude Harmon III.

“We get to the hotel, and as you come into the lobby we go left to our wing of the hotel, and the Americans go right to their wing,” McIlroy said. “So, we’re going left and someone is shouting at me, ‘Rory! Rory!’, and I look back and it’s Ricky Elliott and Claude Harmon. And they’re trying to defuse the situation, but I start having a go at them: ‘Joe LaCava used to be a nice guy when he was caddying for Tiger, and now he’s caddying for that d*ck he’s turned into a …’ I still wasn’t in a great headspace.”

McIlroy says he spent eight minutes after that in a 6-degree plunge pool, twice as much as Lowry, before later joining his European teammates in their team room, where the topic of conversation is McIlroy’s caught-on-TV spats with LaCava and Mackay.

“Then [European captain] Luke [Donald] comes in and sits down and doesn’t acknowledge anyone. And he looks at me and I’m thinking, ‘I could be in trouble here,’ but he goes, ‘Rory! I f—ing loved that!’ And all the boys started banging the table. It was brilliant. It had been a really deflating finish, but it galvanized the team.”

Upon returning to his hotel room on Saturday night, McIlroy was greeted by a text from LaCava: Hey Rory, would love to meet up in the morning to clear the air.

McIlroy ignored it.

There were also three texts and two missed calls from LaCava’s old boss, Tiger Woods.

Said McIlroy: “I sent him a quick message: It will be fine … long day … just want to go to bed.
