Tottenham injury update: James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Ryan Sessegnon latest news and return dates
Tottenham’s stunning start to the season was ended with a costly defeat to rivals Chelsea on Monday night.
While Spurs emerged with some credit after taking the game to the Blues even despite going down to nine men, the injuries that have hit Ange Postecoglou’s side could prove far more serious than the defeat itself.
Already operating with a smaller squad than their title rivals, the loss of key players could have a major impact on where their season goes from here.
James Maddison has arguably been the most influential player in the Premier League this season.
So the sight of him being forced off in the first half having gone down under no contact was a major worry.
Postecoglou, however, sounded upbeat after the game, hinting that the England international was taken off as a precautionary measure more than anything after Cristian Romero’s red card despite a knock to his ankle.
“He got a knock on the ankle,” Postecoglou told BBC Sport.
“We were down one man already. It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point.”
Micky van de Ven
Though there appears to be good news on Maddison, the situation surrounding Micky van de Ven is far more concerning.
The Dutchman has formed an excellent partnership with Cristian Romero in central defence and his recovery speed is vital to Postecoglou’s high line at the crux of his system.
Seconds after Maddison went off injured, van de Ven pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and could not walk of the pitch without help.
“It’s too early but looking at Micky you’re thinking it’s a pretty significant one so you’d assume he’ll be out for a little while,” said the Spurs boss.
Ryan Sessegnon is yet to play at all this season after undergoing hamstring surgery over the course of the summer.
While an October return looked likely at one point, the former Fulham defender has only started light training recently.
Postecoglou said last month: “Sess is still a fair bit of time away; he’s longer-term.”
Potential return date: December 2023
Manor Solomon
Summer signing Manor Salomon required surgery on a knee injury sustained in training and is expected back in December.
