Postecoglou to unleash Bryan Gil as Tottenham wildcard after double injury blow

Ange Postecoglou will see the limits of his Tottenham squad tested over the next week with Premier League fixtures against Fulham and Crystal Palace arriving in quick succession. Spurs close out the first weekend of action back from the October international break when they take on Fulham in a London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday evening.

“It’s been a pretty positive international break for us,” he said on Friday. “In terms of availability I’ll address the international players first. Everyone is kind of back and medical reports seem to be good so no real issues around the guys from a fitness perspective.” In his update, Postecoglou also name-checked four players who had been hit by a recent injury with Rodrigo Bentancur making further progress

“Gio Lo Celso played for Argentina as well which was great, so those guys all came through it well. With Brennan he’s has had a good, solid couple of weeks of training which is good for him with the guys who have been left alongside Bentancur, Gil. They’re all good. Monday night helps us in terms of that respect. All the international players should be available and Brennan we’ll see how he goes in the next couple of days.”

While the Fulham clash being on the Monday night gives ample time for players to recover, just four days later Spurs kick off the following gameweek with a Friday night game against Crystal Palace. Son, James Maddison and Romero have all struggled with issues in the opening months and another London derby coming so quickly after the visit of Fulham, will certainly play on the mind of Postecoglou.

However, as revealed by Postecoglou himself, there is one player in Bryan Gil set for a huge opportunity to have an impact on the first team due to the injuries suffered by Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon. “He can be really important for us,” Postecoglou said of Gil. “He’s one like I said the last couple of weeks it has been great to have him just working really hard at training. He’s missed all of this season so far and it’s well chronicled that we lost Ivan and Manor who play in that left-wing position. Having Bryan fit and available again is great for us.

“He’s, I guess, in the same boat as everyone else because at some point he’ll be forwarded an opportunity and then it’s up to him. He certainly has all the criteria and credentials to play in that position for us and, like I said, his training is getting stronger now, he’s part of the group and I’m sure he’ll get an opportunity.

“We’ve got a Monday night game and then we back it up with a Friday night game, so we’ll probably need a good deal of the squad to do those two games in the next five or six days.” In last season’s game at Selhurst Park, Gil made a significant impression in the 4-0 win after picking up a superb assist for one of Harry Kane’s goals and will be hoping to make a similar impact next Friday.
