Andros Townsend receives four-word message from Everton ace Jenson Metcalfe after Luton Town move
Former Everton winger Andros Townsend has signed for Luton Town on a short-term deal and Toffees’ youngster Jenson Metcalfe has quickly sent a message of support.
The former England international signed a deal until January at Kenilworth Road having been without a club since he was released by the Goodison club having missed the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign with injury.
Townsend only played 27 times for the Toffees across two seasons with the club, scoring seven times but was highly thought of by his teammates in the Goodison Park changing room, with young midfielder Metcalfe quickly offering his support to the 32-year-old.
Townsend’s time on Merseyside is unlikely to live long in the memory of many Everton fans, given the lack of football the former Crystal Palace wide man has played in the last couple of seasons, but his impact behind the scenes at Goodison Park may have gone slightly under the radar.
The 32-year-old made one appearance in the Premier League 2 last year, managing to play 45 minutes in the Toffees 2-0 defeat to Leicester City in May as he stepped up his recovery from injury and in playing and training alongside some of the younger members of the squad, he would have provided an important example.
Despite his recent struggles, the winger does have over 400 professional appearances to his name throughout his career, with more than half of them coming in the Premier League, so he would have served as an excellent role model to the likes of Metcalfe as he went through his recovery.
On the pitch for Everton, Townsend was one of Everton’s better players during Rafa Benitez’s time in charge at Goodison, but Blues fans never really got to see the best of him as his cruciate ligament injury derailed his career in the final months of the season.
Metcalfe on the other hand is going from strength to strength for the Toffees’ youth sides, having picked up three goal involvements in the opening six matches of the Premier League 2 season as well as featuring in the Papa John’s Trophy.
Hopefully, he can continue to impress for the remainder of the season and push his way into first-team consideration in the next couple of years having signed a deal with the Toffees until 2026.
