Everton and Fulham in wings as club approach free transfer gamble

Everton and Fulham have both been keen on Anthony Caci this year. The 28-year-old plays for Mainz and his contract expires at the end of the current season.

He can play at right back or further forward and was a regular for the Bundesliga club last season. Mainz wanted to extend his contract earlier this year, around the time of Everton and Fulham interest, report SportBild.

However, at that time, Caci refused all approaches from Mainz. It was made clear he didn’t want to sign a new deal. The opportunity to take advantage of free agent status was obviously a tempting one.

Since then, Caci has picked up a hamstring injury and is expected to be out of action until the end of 2025. SportBild suggest Mainz could take advantage of the player’s difficult situation to try again for a renewal.

That would be a gamble, indeed on the behalf of both parties. Caci was clearly tempted by a transfer but could renew if he believes the injury would reduce the chances of Everton, Fulham or another club pushing through for a free-agent deal.

Difficult decisions for both parties.
