Ally McCoist says Everton have the most underrated player in the Premier League right now

Everton have now been told by Ally McCoist that they currently have one of the most underrated players in the Premier League.

David Moyes has been able to steady the ship on Merseyside since he returned to the club back in January.

The 62-year-old was able to squeeze everything out of the Everton side which he inherited from Sean Dyche.

A lot of transfer business was done over the summer to provide Moyes with some improved quality for the 2025/26 campaign.

Despite losing the derby at the weekend, McCoist hailed Jack Grealish as the Man of the Match following another strong display by the 30-year-old.

But there is another Everton player who McCoist thinks could well be one of the most underrated in the Premier League.

Moyes has urged Thomas Tuchel to select James Garner, who has impressed in the early stages of the season at left-back.

However, it is another defensive player who McCoist believes goes hugely under the radar for the Toffees.

Speaking on TalkSPORT Daily podcast, McCoist has waxed lyrical about defender James Tarkowski for his consistent displays on Merseyside.

“Head on a chopping block. I am going for Tarkowski,” McCoist said when asked who is one of the most underrated players about.

Tarkowski has outperformed Virgil van Dijk in aerial duels won over recent years, which shows the level he is currently playing at.

A consistent figure in the Everton side, Tarkowski has proven himself to be a real rock at the back for the Toffees.

Although he may not get the recognition he deserves, it is clear he has not gone under the radar with McCoist.

McCoist and Jeff Stelling are both huge fans of James Garner
Tarkowski is not the only player who got a mention in the podcast by McCoist and presenter Jeff Stelling.

Garner has told Tuchel he wants to play for England on the back of his positive start to the campaign.

And he now has the backing of the TalkSPORT duo, with McCoist and Stelling both impressed by the midfielder.

“He’s old school, Jeff. Throw him a jersey and he puts it on, he’ll turn around, have a look at the number, and he’ll say that’ll do me, I’m playing there,” McCoist added.

“The weekend summed him up perfectly, [Moyes] played Mykolenko for the balance in his team, who came in and played well.

“But you’ve got to try and sneak a point, what do you do? I’ll put Garner at left-back, where he played the previous week, and you know he did exceptionally well.”

Everton want Tarkowski and Garner signed on new deals before it gets to the end of their current contracts in the summer.
