David Moyes backed his forwards to pick up goals this season after another tough match for his frontline in the Merseyside derby. Beto was withdrawn at half-time after struggling to make an impact in the eventual 2-1 lossat Anfield.
Beto had enjoyed success against Liverpool in recent years but failed to cause Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate problems on Saturday, putting his only effort over the bar after an Iliman Ndiaye cross.
Thierno Barry was also unable to cause the Reds any real difficulty, either, after coming on at the breal
Moyes remained protective of his striker, however, and insisted on backing them after the loss, in which midfielder Idrissa Gueye grabbed the Blues’ goal.
Asked about his frontmen after the defeat, the Everton manager said: “We still need to supply the forwards with really good opportunities, so we know that.
“We’ve been well aware of this. I’ve said many times, and I’ll say that again and I repeat myself, we don’t have the 70s or 80s [million pounds] or even more it takes to buy certain players, we’ve had to buy within our means and we’ll hugely support the ones we’ve got because they’ll score us goals and I’m sure they’ll get quite a few by the end of the season.”
Beto has scored twice so far this season – in the Carabao Cup against Mansfield Town and in the Premier League win at Wolverhampton Wanderers – but then missed several good chances in the 0-0 home draw with Aston Villa last weekeend.

Barry is yet to open his account after a £27.5m move from Villarreal in the summer. Youssef Chermiti, meanwhile, was sold to Rangers on deadline day.
On the performance of Barry, Moyes had praise. He said: “I thought Barry came on and had moments as well, liked to play a couple of times, so he had bits of that, but he’s still learning as well.
“And certainly it’s a big place to learn coming to Anfield.”
