Beto reveals the tactic David Moyes is implementing in Everton training ahead of Liverpool clash

Everton striker Beto has shared the instruction his manager David Moyes is giving him ahead of the Merseyside Derby.

The Toffees have the odds stacked against them going into the first Merseyside Derby of the season this weekend.

Moyes’ side could close the gap on the league leaders to just two points if they are able to secure a victory at Anfield.

It has been a bright start to the campaign for Everton, but a win at the weekend would be a real statement for the Blues.

Robbie Fowler does not expect Everton to beat Liverpool despite the impact of Jack Grealish and the other summer signings.

Finding the back of the net consistently has been an issue for Everton, with Beto now sharing something Moyes has told him behind the scenes.

Earlier in the year, Moyes admitted Beto was frustrating him as the Scot expected more from the 27-year-old.

The Portugal-born striker has found the back of the net this season against Wolves, but has not scored in any of the other three games.

Speaking to The Times, Beto has shared some insight from training at Finch Farm ahead of the game against their city rivals on Saturday.

“Sometimes in some exercises, he’ll [Moyes] say, ‘Beto, come here.’ And the exercise is still running, but he just stopped to explain to me some movement: ‘Maybe go here, you need to go here. When Jake [O’Brien] has the ball, you go to the back post or you go to the first post,’ he said.

“I don’t know why people kept thinking that we don’t have a good relationship. We are good. He taught me a lot and he put me under a lot of pressure. I go home thinking, ‘I need to be better. I need to be better. If not, he’s going to put me on the bench.’”

Moyes is keen for Beto to improve his control, but the striker showed last season that he can put together a hot run of form.

With Thierno Barry now at the club, a goal in the derby on Saturday for Beto could offer a huge boost for his confidence.

Consistency is the name of the game for the Everton striker, who has shown in the past that he has the talent to be the starting striker.

Although he did not get on the scoresheet last weekend, Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa said Beto was a real handful to play against.

He will potentially be coming up against Virgil van Dijk this weekend, but he did score last season in the draw at Goodison Park against the Reds.

Clearly, Beto is wanting to improve and he has told Paul Joyce what he is doing to get better at Finch Farm.

“Sometimes I grab the staff after training and they say, ‘Beto, it’s enough.’ I said, ‘No, no. Let me keep doing the repetition, repetition, repetition because I need to improve,” said Beto.

“A striker needs to score goals. That is at every club. It is not that I didn’t like my time at Everton, but I didn’t like the way I performed until today. I feel like I could have done more.

“I think that I need to prove to myself, not just for the staff or for the fans, but prove to myself that I’m the No9.”
