The goal? To make sports more accessible for kids who lack reliable means of getting to and from games, practices, or tournaments—something Kobe felt passionate about in his later years.
Before his tragic passing in 2020, Kobe Bryant often spoke about the barriers young athletes face, especially those from low-income areas. He witnessed firsthand how talented players struggled simply because they didn’t have a ride. According to sources close to the foundation, Kobe had already been working on a plan to fund transportation initiatives for youth sports programs long before the fatal helicopter crash that took his life, along with his daughter Gianna and seven others.
The donation of the buses is the latest in a series of efforts to carry on his mission. Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s widow, helped coordinate the surprise delivery in partnership with the Lakers organization.
