Netflix Set to Release Documentary on LeBron James’ Historic Career — Plus More Exciting Sports Content Coming Your Way

June 5, 2025 — Los Angeles, CA

Netflix is making a powerful move into the world of sports storytelling with its latest announcement: a new, in-depth documentary chronicling the legendary career of NBA superstar LeBron James. The streaming giant revealed today that the upcoming feature will delve into LeBron’s unparalleled journey from a high school prodigy in Akron, Ohio to becoming one of the most iconic athletes of all time.

The documentary, titled “King: The LeBron James Story”, is expected to blend never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews, and behind-the-scenes moments to capture the essence of LeBron’s two-decade-long career. From his early days at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School to his NBA Championships with the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers, the film will chronicle not just the on-court triumphs but also LeBron’s impact off the court — from activism to philanthropy and business ventures.

Executive produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter under their SpringHill Company banner, the documentary aims to be more than just a highlight reel. It promises an intimate look at the pressures of greatness, the challenges of fame, and the decisions that shaped the man behind the jersey.

“LeBron James is a once-in-a-generation athlete whose story transcends basketball,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s Vice President of Unscripted and Documentary Series. “We’re honored to bring this powerful narrative to our global audience. This film will offer both fans and newcomers a deeper understanding of the legacy he’s built — and continues to build.”

The release date for the documentary has not yet been officially announced, but it is expected to premiere globally on Netflix later this year.

A New Era for Sports on Netflix

The LeBron documentary is part of a broader strategy by Netflix to expand its sports content lineup. Following the success of series like Drive to Survive (Formula 1), Full Swing (PGA Tour), and Break Point (tennis), the streaming platform is doubling down on its commitment to sports entertainment.

Coming soon are original series and documentaries focused on the NFL, international soccer stars, and even esports. Among the most anticipated projects is a behind-the-scenes series with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, and a gripping mini-series exploring the rise of mixed martial arts.

“We’re seeing an incredible appetite for sports stories that go beyond the scoreboard,” said Riegg. “Viewers want to connect with athletes on a personal level — to understand their struggles, sacrifices, and humanity.”

More Than a Game

As for “King: The LeBron James Story,” anticipation is already sky-high. The announcement has generated buzz across social media, with fans, fellow athletes, and sports commentators expressing excitement. Many see it as a fitting tribute to a player who has not only dominated the hardwood but also redefined what it means to be an athlete in the 21st century.

With this documentary, Netflix and LeBron James are poised to create a cultural moment — one that blends inspiration, nostalgia, and the unrelenting pursuit of greatness.
